I just replaced the decking in my boat with marine plywood (epoxy coated the under side) and was wondering what steps and material I should use to coat and finish the top side. Thanks in advance.

Re: Deck replacing questions.

Well you're off to a great start. Where you want to go from here is up to you. On my project I just applied 2 coats of epoxy resin on the top (I added some glass cloth to the seams) and then went with marine vinyl flooring. Glassing the whole thing would certainy make it more durable and last longer. There are numerous choices for your flooring. Vinyl, carpet, paint, non-skid prodects like Durabak and Kiwi Grip etc etc.

Re: Deck replacing questions.

Thanks Ezmobee. This is my first project and I am still a learning in process. I did by the Durabak non-slip floor coating. I have 2 kids that will be getting in and out of the lake and I like the idea of having no carpet to hold in the moisture. I think I will put a layer of 1.5 glass oz down in between coats, just as an added precaution. Thanks again.

dont know if id coat w/ resin, lay mat, paint, lay mat, paint if thats what your thinkin, you may have bonding concerns later. prep your wood, lay your mat, then paint, i think you'll be much happier in the end with less troubles later.
unless i misunderstood your work process, in that case, disreguard.

Yeah I hope I'm misreading you as well...you aren't talking about putting glass between coats of Durbak are you?

Sorry about that fellas, I should have explained better. I will first prep the deck, then put a coat of resin down first, then a layer of mat, then a layer of resin, (maybe a second coat of resin) and then finally the Durabak. Thanks.

That is pretty much the process i'm going to use. Resin on the wood, a couple oz of mat with resin then apply the Durabak.

Post some pictures of your progress!

You got it timfives. I'm waiting out the weather now. It's been 40 and raining for the past 4 days here in lovely northern Ohio. I'll keep you posted.

Re: Deck replacing questions.

Alright the weather here has been perfect for working on the boat and I'm sorry it's been some time since I've posted progress. I have however just updated my profile and added picture to my album. Hopefully you can see them. I have to tell you the Durabak is the way to go for all the carpet haters. Expensive but well worth it. The only thing left is to replace the bow seat, dash and sun deck covers (vinyl) then I'm off to the lake :D.

Thanks ezmobee. I appreciate it. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, even though I'm not going to be quitting my day job just yet. Hope to be getting out on the lake very soon.
