I'm completely new to working on boats. Something i hope very much to finally understand how to do!
The first step(I believe) In restoring my boat is to replace the strings. I know i need to use a circular saw and set it to the correct depth, but how do i know what the correct depth is?
Also, i'll post a pic but in the back right in front of the transom, the glass is rotted through. It's on either side of the indention(looks like for a batteror small gas tank) should i just glass over it? Or what?
Thanks for all the help guys.

Re: Deck removal

It's pretty hard to see. It's almost right under the bolt's that go through the transom. I'll get out there and clean it out some more, get some better pics.

Ayuh,... Punch a hole in the deck, 'n Measure it's thickness...

If the glass is Rotten,... Dig it out, 'n replace it....
That little pocket is where the bilgepump goes to drain/ pump out the bilges from under the deck...

Re: Deck removal

Thanks for the reply, i cleaned it out today to get some better pics. If there is no pump there, should i replace it? There is only a drain hole.
Anyways, with the glass. What do i use to shape it?
Here are some better pics.

Re: Deck removal

With the peice of wood under the front, it is also rotting. When i pull the cap, will I be able to replace this? There is foam on the other side of the board. Is there going to be more foam under the deck?
Thanks again!

Re: Deck removal

hi cabbie

welcome to grind and itch :D

the deck is rotten...so is the transom.

after you pull the cap....

pull the deck.
set you circ saw as suggested mostly 1/2 inch....and up it comes.

you will find foam under the deck.....and rotten stringers.
from there you will know how to proceed.

pulling the transom is a different story...we can help you with that later,,,but first finish your demolition and get to bare hull.

in the mean time......start reading about plywood....make your decision about what kind you want to use, get it and start it drying. (i dont care where it comes from...its too wet.)

take pics as you rip the stuff out.....and we will help you.

cheers

Re: Deck removal

Sounds good to me! Thanks for the help.
When i cut the deck, do i just go as close as i can to the side? And i know it sounds dumb, but i need something cleared up for me. Is the stringers the studs in the deck?

I would start by drilling some holes away from the sides (hull) in your deck and try to see or get an ideal of whats underthrere before you start tearing into it.From their you should be able to get a feel for were you should cut and how much. Be careful when cutting the sides of the deck, you don't want to cut through the hull. When you get to the sides go slow and leave a lip around the edge so you don't get to close. You will have to go back and grind out the sides later.

The stringers are the wood incased in glass that are somehow attached to the inner hull. I would suggest that you read Oops thread. ( Hull extension)

Are you redoing this boat for your dad?

Re: Deck removal

Okay, so i'll use the skill saw to get the main part out, then go around with a die grinder to do the rest. AFTER i take some core samples.
Thanks for the tips, and yes. Well sorta, i guess in the memory of my father.

Re: Deck removal

uasually 3-5 ins away from the hull.....but if that wood is rot...than it all has to come out. if its not rot.....even a foot is good.

yes...the stringers are the studs that the deck is screwed to.....there may be some cross frames, at the 4 foot joint of the plywood as well.

back tommorow....cya

Re: Deck removal

Okay sweet. Just wanted to make sure i understood correctly. I emagine i will replace it all, even if the wood is good. Hopefull i'll get started taking the cap off tomorrow or the next day. So when i get ready to replace the stringer i just cut through the old glass and then put the new boards where i want them, and re-glass them into place?
Should i put down another layer of glass in the hull?

yes....cut out out the old stringers and glass surrounding them. place them where the old ones were....rule of thumb....replace what was there....where it was. (unless you really know what you are doing)

as far as adding another layer to the hull....adding another layer will just add weight, unless the hull is weak.....then grind the hull back to the glass and add another layer or 2 of 1.5 csm.....if you 1708 wrap the inner hull you will add another 50 lbs easy and the stregnth will be over kill.
3 layers of 1708 is approx the thickness of a hull.

i did it in mine because of the extension......(the boat is heavyer than i would like it.....but its still an awesome ride)

Re: Deck removal

awesome info! Thanks for posting! I'm checking out of public school tomorrow so i can get into home school and get a full time job. So, the part that requires money(right now even starting because i have to build a engine stand) is going to be put on hold for a short short time. But then will pick up fast!
Any cheap tricks to build a stand?
Thanks!
