Deck Question

So I went out to the boat tonight to cut a hole in the deck to see what I was working with. I felt around the deck to see if there were any soft spots. To my surprise there were none. I thought I might have to replace it but now I'm not so sure. However I'm not out of the woods. The previous owner layed a sheet of plywood down over the deck so that he could mount the seats he said. He silconed around the edges of the plywood so that it would not get under it. I know sometime that guys put ply over the deck for a cheap fix. Do you think that the deck is rotten under the ply or do you think the guy was honest about laying a piece of ply down to mount the seats. The next step is to see if I can unscrew the plywood from the deck and see what is there. I'm pry that it won't be bad.

Re: Deck Question

If the deck was solid, why didn't he mount the seat directly to the deck? I would suspect the ply sheeting is hiding something!!

Re: Deck Question

sounds right to me, only because when I bought my cheapo fixer upper, the previous owner said "I put in a new floor"....well the deck he put in is 3/4 pressure treated with carpet glued over it and it is soft all over...she will be on jacks this weekend and let the cutting commence....the 3/4 was laid in over the original deck....ughhhhhhhhhhhh

Re: Deck Question

I had the same thing with my boat. Once I pulled the 3/4 ply and removed the drywall screws, I found everything to be rotten. My guess is you will find rot underneath also. Winter is the time to be fixing this kind of stuff.

Have a great day,

Rob.
