Deck painting before carpet install question.

Now that the boating season is over for me here near the Illinois-Wisconsin border I started my interior re-do on my 1965 16ft Clipper Craft runabout. So I pulled the carpet and there is a lot of carpet glue to remove. The carpet the previous owner used was the cheap easter grass type of stuff. So when I pulled it a lot of the backing was left and it looks like on the deck he used triple the necessary amount of glue.

Last week when I started I was using 60 grit discs on a 5" random orbit sander. It took about an hour and a half and 3 discs to clean about 2 square feet of deck.

After reading a few resto threads I decided to try using a flap disc on my grinder. I stopped at Harbor Freight and picked up a few of their cheap ones and I stopped at Menards and picked up a "good" one. I arbored a cheap one and all I can say is "WOW!" What a difference. in about 15 minutes I doubled the cleaned area. they are 36 grit and I am almost thinking I should use a finer grit to slow down the work a touch.

Now here's the root of my question. In a few spots I removed paint from the deck and glass is visible. It's nice and clean and smooth as, well, glass. There aren't any exposed fibers, just well laminated glass. Do I need to repaint the deck prior to gluing down the new, prettier, carpeting?

Welcime to iBoats!
Short answer No. What I would recommend it that your grind off ALL of the paint and then give the deck a fresh coat of resin. I would then investigate using snaps or velcro to attach your carpet and totally forego the adhesive this way If/when the carpet needs replaced you will NOT have the hassle you are having now.

I'm just sayin...:D

I had considered both velcro and snaps to install the new carpet. I just hadn't yet searched out a thread on how to's for either. Any suggestions?

I prefer velcro. You can get it in Wide Self adhesive strips. Put it on the edges and a couple of strips down the interior and your good to go. If the adhesive does evetually give way you can alway glue it back down.
