deck covering option

Once the weather warms up I'm planning on restoring an old starcraft holiday. I was planning on using some epoxy resin to seal up both the top and bottom of the plywood before I lay it down, but I'm caught up with what I should use to cover the plywood to make it a nice looking and friendly surface. Right now I currently have some carpet on the old deck and I definitely don't want to go that route again. I looked into the marine vinyl and honestly I don't feel like dealing with the glue and the price  I was walking through the paint department at Home Depot and found this stuff called RESTORE for decks and was wondering if anyone has had any experience or thoughts about it. The demonstration model they have in the store looks and feels great. If anyone has any thoughts or experience with it I'd love to hear it... heres a link to the stuff I'm talking about .... Restore Deck Liquid Armor Resurfacer 2 Gal Kit Water Based Charleston Exterior Coating-49010 at The Home Depot

Thanks

Re: deck covering option

My daughter used it on her TIRED deck. Looks great and seems to be holding up well but...

It's NOT a sealer and it's NOT waterproof. It smooths out rough and splintered decks but I would not used it in a Marine Environment.

Re: deck covering option

I saw that it was not a sealer and that it was not waterproof, I'm going to seal both sides of the plywood with epoxy first, and then put this on top of the epoxy. The epoxy would seal and waterproof the deck, this would just go on top of the epoxy to have something to walk on and look nice

Re: deck covering option

Hi, from what I have seen DO NOT PUT THAT over the epoxy. I would do a test piece first. But my personal opinion(I am a carpenter, just finished buildings wife's dream kitchen, now I found out I got to get a desk built, the old one doesn't match). We used that stuff on my nieces deck 2 years ago, following all the instructions. Seems to be ?cracking? And chipping off in heavily walked areas. I always test stuff out. Even if adds time on now, you may save a lot of headache down the road. Now back to the desk, she says it would be nice to have while I am out fishing (maybe it was more of IT WILL BE DONE BEFORE THAT POLE GOES IN THE BOAT). Would be nice to know if you use it, how you applied and your end result.

To me, that deck restore looks like caca-doody and I wouldn't have it in my boat. I also can't see it being that long lasting before it looks like double caca-doody.

The marine vinyl is a lot more work, but gosh darn it looks good when you're done if you do it right!

The vinyl is also long lasting and very durable, mine is getting close to 2 yrs. old and still looks like brand new after I clean it. The vinyl is also stupid easy to clean, something I can't see the deck restorer being.

If you do use the deck restorer, let us know how it turns out and show us some pics.

Re: deck covering option

Any reason you say not to put it on top of the epoxy? The restore says that it is not waterproof and not a sealer, thats why i was going to be using epoxy on both sides of the deck first. The boat does not get a lot of use, a few times during the summer so it's not going to be really beat up, and for the amount of time that I use the boat I thought this looked like it would be ideal

Re: deck covering option

If you coat with epoxy then I see no reason at all. As previosly stated, let us know your long term results.

Re: deck covering option

the reason would be to have something nicer looking than plain looking plywood and a nice surface to walk on

Re: deck covering option

I went with Deckadence marine flooring and couldn't be happier (except the price and shipping cost...and very poor customer support). It stays cool, provides cushion, and will not stain. Water runs through it and you don't glue it down or install snaps - just cut it out and lay it down.

Seaming large pieces is a bit of an art, but overall its been a great product.

18 oz layer of roving with epoxy, coat a couple times, when paint with nonskid marine deck paint. Just don't use the West Marine stuff as it keeps coming up on me
