I bought an 82' Johnson V4 90hp this spring. Did the carbs, fuel pump, thermostats, plugs, a coil, wires, all new fuel ines through out. Not much left, The reeds looked good. It runs great, and Idles fine as well. So my question is should I decarbonize it? I go by the rule if it ain't broke don't fix it. But this topic seems to pop up quite often. I would have to say it has probably never been done that I am aware of. The guy I bought it from had it serviced at a marina, (they had the bottom carb float way off,a bad coil and bad themostats in it) Doesn't sound like the kind of place that would decarb a motor. So should I or shouldn't I? Maybe in the Fall? or maybe never?

Yes. And the Fall would be a good time to do it. I advise to have a new set of plugs to go in after it's done (as you already put new plugs in,definately wait till fall).<br />What the stuff does is remove the "coke" or carbon from the ring lands, head, ect, and blows it out the exaust...Kinda like blowing it's nose.
