Hey Folks,
So I was going to pull out my boat to get it out of my boat lift because of Hurricane Irma. I lift the back cover up and the stench of death smacks me in the face. Look down and there is a dead cat in the stern of my boat. I figure it has been in there for 4-5 weeks as it was hanging around our house awhile back and that's when it disappeared. It is awful guys. I am in FL and its been baking under my cover in 90+ degree heat for that long. The smell has seeped into every part of my boat and you can see there is still an outline of the cat where it melted into the fiberglass/gelcoat. Any suggestions on how to remove? Had a few people recommend Bar Keepers and Peroxide.
Suggestions to get the smell out of all my cushions too?

Warning. One of the pics is pretty nasty. So open with care. :)

The smell guys....the smell. Oh my........

E-bay Ozone generator they have smaller ones around 40-50$. I have one I use in the dog room in the house anyplace there are organic based odors. I use it on my hunting gear and clothing to get rid of any human odor. They work great.

Bleach on the stain, the odor may go away on it's own, just leave it open. I had an opossum die in mine.

contact someone like ServiceMaster.
They use ozone machines to clear out odors after fires, or when someone dies and is not found for a while.
If they won't rent one to you, they will know someone that will.

Ozone is really one of those things you don't want to breathe much of, I'd absolutely never have one inside a house with people inside. 03 doesn't care if the stuff it is attacking is an organic odor, or the inside of your lungs. If it is actually generating ozone, it is damaging everyone's lungs. Limited short term exposure isn't a huge deal, long term will cause permanent irreversible damage.

For reference, the allowable carbon monoxide level is 9 parts per million for 8 hours. The allowable ozone exposure is .07 PPM for 8 hours!!

on the stain if on gelcoat a bit of powder ajax and water. For the rest I'd just leave uncovered for a couple week and yes, let it get rained on. That is about as free as you are going to get so try it. Then start paying people.

Do you just assume that people do not read the directions? there is a sticker on the machine that explains safe usage.

I would say it's safe to assume that a lot people do not read instructions or not in it's entirety. The people that run generators INSIDE there homes comes to mind, of which, weren't there 3 or 4 in Florida that perished from that?

I purchased an Ozone Generator off Amazon last night. Should be here by the weekend. Leave it in for a week?

How about cleaning the rest of the boat? I need something that is safe on my vinyl but cut through the nastiness.

Or the people who use BBQ's inside up north for heat during a power failure.

If a dead body has rotted to the point of smelling in a car then the car is considered a total loss. Nothing removes all of the smell. You may have an insurance claim that covers it or at least all of the foam and Vinyl. I'd get a claim and estimate from a boat yard.

I used to work in the insurance industry. I can't count the number of people who burnt down their own home or died because of not reading directions. So yes, that is a fairly safe assumption. You also very clearly stated you used it in your dog room in your house.

The people that make ozone generators are also at fault, as they are often sold for purposes way beyond what they should be used for.

Yeah, we've been getting PSA's on our phones to not use generators in your home or garage. You know the only reason it was sent because people have died post Irma.

Anyway, I am not going to be in the boat while its running. AM I cool? :)

I've never used it, but I've heard good things about "OdorXit" It might be worth a shot.
