Re: Dead Tacho

That's kinda what I was thinking, Clanton. The power pack number superceeds to 396224 and is from the 85 looper V4 and the 85 275 V8. Hence the 6100 RPM limiter.

I also think he is describing the water cooled rec/reg which explains why it does not look like the pictures but is most likely the source of the problem.

I guess!?!

Gents,

The engine is a VRO 140, 4 cylinder.
Model no. 140 TLCUA Serial no. 1445649. date 1989

Taken from the handbook but I can not see anything on the engine to verify.

I don't have a camera but will try.

The closest resemblence to the larger pack is 1134041 in trents drawing, but it doesn't have the additional top beuilt onto it. Completely flat.

I will send emails if I know addresses. Are they on the site?

Thanks

NG

I believe CU is 1987. Small bore looper V4.

Good luck!

Re: Dead Tacho

Guys,

Engine is the same but the ignition unit/power pack is different. The one there is the same as a spare and the one identified by Clanton.

Mine does not have the cantral plastic raised bit with the white square sticker on it. On mine, the rasied part is a separate box, located on the left side.

NG

Re: Dead Tacho

Pictured is a 1988 or newer. The 1987 uses a different ignition set up. The reg/rec is still located in the same place on both. It's a water cooled unit bolted into the top of the block with 6 (1/4x20) bolts. Most likely the source of the problem if ALL the wires on the tach are connected properly and it is set to position 6.

Good luck!

Re: Dead Tacho

Dhadley,

Spot on. I just checked and I do have 6 bolts holding it onto a recess in the block. I presume its a water jacket.

So I have a water cooled rectifier with a speed limiter on top. The tacho is set to 4 and should be 6, but is should still work so I have a problem.

Not sure where to check.

I presume the stator outputs feeds the rectifier. I should see ac here. A grey wire should go to tyhe tacho, also AC. DC output should supply the ignition system (where ever this is) and also feed the speed limiter which in turn supplies the coils. I don't think I have missed anything??

I don't know if it is worth swapping my rectifier. It is off a newer model but I assume it will work OK ??

I think I am getting somewhere slowly. Certainly learning a lot about my engine.

Hopefully I shouldn't need to call the marina to help.

Thanks guys.

NG

Re: Dead Tacho

The rev limiter is in the power pack and has nothing to do with the tach. Current comes from the stator into the water cooled regulator / rectifier (yellow and yellow/grey wires). The tach lead is the grey wire coming out of the reg/rec. The tach must be grounded.

The way to test these reg/rec is described in the service manuals and is called a running test. If the tach is wired and fed correctly, most of the time is the reg/rec. Not all that uncommon.

Good luck!

Re: Dead Tacho

yippee doodle doo.

I can close this post at last.

Tach is now working. I replaced the rectifier unit with my spare. I had to make a mod to a live feed which I needed on my spare one but now all is working. Not sure of the accuracy but the engine is running fast and tach shows 1200 so I think its OK.

Thanks for all you help identifying the components.

NG
