I would like to repaint but around the tilt tube and on the stern bracket there is grease from the zerk fittings that has oozed out over the years. What is the best de-greaser to dissolve this type of grease?

If you're just cleaning it, use a green-product engine cleaner. If you're going to repaint, use the cleaner then follow with old-fashioned oven cleaner. It will take off everything down to primer or bare metal...be safe, read and follow the label directions. Hose it off with water as the rinse and bag the powerhead beforehand to keep H2O out of there.

I have always had good results with a can of brakecleaner.I would highly recommend priming if you are painting any aluminum and there is mostly aluminum on an outboard.Charlie

I always start out with shop grade paper towels sprayed with WD-40. Cuts right through the grease with ease. Then I spray with simple green and let soak and wash with a cloth rag. I also use Lestoil dilluted with hot water, works nice.
