dating my outboard

hi all

just been given an outboard which I was told was a johnson trying to date it only identifying numbers is a silver disc on the block got a number but cant seem to work out model year

SJ25RPLJ

just as a note the number on one of the coils is 582508 2710-0a

Recheck those letters, they don't look right.

S = South America or Salt Water Edition (depending on year)
J = Johnson
25 = Horsepower
R = Rope start
P = Normally means Power Steering or Power trim & tilt----doesn't make sense on a 25hp
LJ = Don't make sense either. This is where the date code should be. The code word is INTRODUCES, where I=1, N=2, T=3, and so on. Example: EC would be 98 (1998)

EDIT: Never mind, I found it. It is a 1993 Commercial motor. All the code rules go out the window when speaking of commercial motors.

It is a Commercial model ... the model numbering does not follow the same pattern as recreational models

It is a 1993 25 hp

hey guys thanks I was scratching my head a bit with those last 2 letters can now see if I can find a user manual online then try to start the beasty
