Sadly we had a fellow (didn't know him) venture out on the ice on a local small lake. Ice was good around the shore but 100' out it wasn't thick enough and he went through and drowned. I like fresh fish too but come on, it just isn't worth the risk.

I agree, not worth the risk.

Thats why ice spikes are recommended equipment. We have those accidents at the beginning and ends of the season :( The ice gets to be over 18"-36" thick in the peak season....... we have allot of vehicles go thru the ice too.

There doesn't have to be any ice on top of the water for cold water to kill you:

I wear this when fishing over cold water or out on the ice:

Even a PFD out of the boat can save your life when out on the ice, but you have to be wearing it. You can actually survive for an hour or more in frigid water... if you can keep your head above water to prevent drowning:

This is another example of how much wearing floatation helps versus not wearing any:

Very sad. You can walk anywhere here as its been below -40 for some time, but still people will be driving out and drowning. Ice isn't thick enough yet.

My first thought was that the thread title is a tad harsh. But...

We are guaranteed to have a half dozen over the winter....my guess is probably about 2 weeks from the first skidoo driver that thinks the river ice is good to go.
