Im new to boating to so i might not be much help but on the front of my cover ( facing the boat ) there is a little lever that moves left and right ! thats what i use to take my cover off ! I have the same problem as you regarding getting it in to gears ?? i cant work them out ?

well i can get that cover off. i mean the entire shell so i can get the where the gears are but thanks again.

well i took off my lower unit and checked the gears. they weren't sheared or anything and i'm suprised because there wasn't even enough oil in it to fill up a tablespoon! i got some oil and am in the process of changing it out. my question is the part that connects the linkage together in the lower unit is working good but for some reason it looks as if the motor is laying on the linkage in the very top and that seems to be what is keeping it from going into forward. reverse still works great.

Are both shift shafts fully into the coupler? The bolts pass though the divets in the shift shafts to lock them into it, rather than simply clamping them. If they're not in fully you'll loose forward.

i appreciate all the help. i finally got it up and running and tested it out on the lake. it ran like a top. thank you to everyone who helped the "dang newbie". you guys have made the difference in getting out on the water or sitting on the shore.
