Buddies got a 50hp yamaha and between duck and alligator hunting has managed to damaged bend break off part of his prop. the gearcase is working fine but the prop not so much. My question is if the prop is as bad as i say could that over rev the engine and what would be some symptons of an over rev condition??

Re: Damaged prop

Overrev could occur if a large piece is gone but the vibration is the bigger concern. An engine will handle a mild overrev condition and not suffer any damage but L/U vibration will damage seals and bearings.

Re: Damaged prop

Don't mess around with a damaged prop. The bearings in the lower unit will take a beating and will give out sooner rather than later. Have the prop rebuilt for 70-100 bucks and don't worry about it. That vibration will kill everything.
