I ran hard into a sandy bottom with my Yamaha 200 and the bottow 6 inches of the fin or rudder(?) at the very bottom of the low end broke off. The engine has run perfectly since, but I fear this should be replaced somehow. Any ideas how to do this? I have a photo I could email to any knowledable responder. Thanks in advance.

I read elsewhere in this forum that a new piece can be welded on by a boat shop. The bottom "fin" is called the skeg.

Howdy, troutfly.

As John points out, welding on new skegs is fairly common.

An alternative at around the same price is a bolt on Stainless Steel replacement called SkegGard. It requires enough of a stump for the bolts.

I use a SkegGard as a cover and reinforcement of my undamaged skeg with excellent results.

You need something there. The purpose of the skeg is not steering, it is to protect your expensive prop.

Good luck. :)

My most sincere and surprised gratitude for the excellent response to my problem: knowledgable and extremely helpful! This is my first ever try at any kind of "chat/help" site and it proved immediately very successful.
I don't know if thesecomments go directly to the two men who replied with the answers or on to the whole chat room. But I hope it gets to the two specific repliers.
Again thanks. Troutfly
