The 78 year old founder and CEO of the company that I work for came by today, showed me his Audi RS7... he took it in for an oil change and decided to buy another one that was much more expensive and now has 2. His advice to me was was to send a balloon up (List It) the week that Dale Jr retires, turn down offers until you get top dollar, back off and list it again 6 months later. Not a bad plan. The car itself is not a Z06 or a limited edition. So currently a used, low mileage Vette is worth somewhere in the $55k-$65k range. What brings value to the table is the signature on the dash panel and the fact that the first owner was Jr. That value is VERY subjective. Because of that, it is worth whatever it is sold for because both the seller and buyer agreed on a price. I have seen cars go through the auction that were ?appraised? by the seller at $300k (reserve), but the highest bid was $225k. So, on that day, what was it worth? The longer you hold on to it, the greater your expenses will be. However, you will also have satisfaction knowing you own Jr?s Vette. Personally, I would run it through a Mecum or Jackson-Barrett specialty auction with a high reserve and see what it brings. It will cost a couple grand to appraise it that way, but you will know. Once it is out there that this car is for sale, people who are Jr fans and want it will come out of the wood work. What it is worth is what someone places the value on Jr?s name.
Each of those other cars listed that sold for high figures were special cars. This one is not so special in that it might have been titled to Jr (might have been ... was his name on the paperwork you signed? Is his autograph on the bill of sale?) but he only drove it a few miles (less than 300 miles on the car and how many of those did he put on the car?).
Do not misunderstand what I am saying, the car has value, and maybe to someone it will be worth $250k or more, but it will take someone very special. It will go up in value the day Jr dies, that is a given.
So, keep your feet on the ground, your head out of the clouds, don?t let it go for too little, but if you really want to sell it for top dollar, be patient and wait while letting it be know in the right circles that it is for sale.
