Looking at Google Earth, Maryport has a nice looking harbor and marina.
Looking at the Scot side; Where is the intended destination?
I see a bunch of small towns with beaches but no official place to tie up.

Apparently there is a place to tie up but i haven't seen it for myself, a mate of mine sails across there but comes straight back. I'm looking at just going straight across between dalbeattie and kikrcudbrighte on the coast

That boat in your picture sure looks like a 25-30 foot boat, but maybe I'm not seeing it well. Anyone else think it's rather big for a 17 footer?

He's in the UK. They have no idea of distance. They still weigh themselves in Stones, and sell petrol by the litre, but post speed limits in miles per hour. They're ALL mixed up.
