We have a 99 Bayliner 1750 with a 3.0 mercruiser. Looking for some visual help. Last sunday we were about 5 minutes into a boat ride and lost power, rpm and gained a really rough runnning engine. Did not overheat. Got it back to the dock loaded it up and came home. i diagnosed a blown headgasket. I opened it up and I was correct. Usually, head gaskets blow for a reason. i can't figure out why it went, maybe it just decided it give way. The visual question is in the pic. Look at the cyl head. The part between 2 and 3 blew; but what is up with taht white exhaust valve on the end? Also, the tow cylinders that the gasket blew between are a lot cleaner than the end two cylinders. They look like they took water and were washed; but when i pulled the plugs, they were all similiar and none were washed looking. Any advice, related to the visual question or not is welcome. i am going to take the head to the machine shop and have them tcheck it out, but otherwise, put it back together. thanks mike

If some water did get in the cylinders it would have turned to steam and that is one reason they may be clean. Kind of an internal steam cleaner. If too much gets in there or for too long a period much worse things could have quickly happened. Good thing you caught it quickly.

Man those puppies are washed clean as new! That is exactly where mine let loose just make sure you replace the head bolts and when assembly is complete run it up to operating temp and then let it cool back down to ambiant temp and re- check the torque on the head bolts!

Good to know it isn't completely uncommon. How did the water get in there? The blown out portion of the gasket is not through a jacket area. Is it a manifold problem?

The water could have been in that area and finally made its way in once it blew. Since it was a small amount of water it could be possible.

Am I overthinking it a little?

I was also thining that some unburned fuel could have cleaned the cylinders; but none of the plugs were clean or fuel fouled.

Fuel wouldn't do that. If it did people would flood their engines to clean them. Water does that. I have heard of people injecting water to clean the cylinders.
