Cuts out when giving throttle

Just done the impeller on my 1987 johnson 25hp. everything went back together well and it pumps great. It revs up nicely when it is in neutral and sounds bob on. Took it for a spin, set off nice and easy then I gave it some throttle and it just stopped. Started ok and off we went again. 1\4 throttle good a little bit more ok ,try for a bit of speed then dies:. starts ok again, anchored up, and run it in neutral, no problem. Set off again just the same when speed is wanted. What have I done, well upset cos I took my time and did a good job of the impeller etc.

Check the fuel system first for tank venting, obstructions to the fuel flow and for air leaks into the fuel line (esp at the connector)

Check the fuel pump by gently pumping the bulb to see if that will keep it going.

BUT I think you will be needing to clean the carb!

Thanks for your prompt reply, Is a carb clean difficult? I managed the impeller fine. tasasdaddy gave me some sound tips

Carb rebuilding, as far as difficulty, is in par with changing out a water pump.

Will do. Just seems strange that it ran just fine before and runs ok in neutral.

Now it wont rev in neutral. but starts 1st time

Same thing here. I have a 25HP 1987 Evinrude. Ran fine and then all of a sudden died when I gave it throttle. It will idle "ok" but in neutral or in gear the min I give it throttle it dies.

I just recently changed the spark plugs and fuel line from the fuel port on the motor to the fuel pump.

This weekend probably going to clean the carb. keep me posted and I will do the same.

so I disassembled the carb and found this (see kic). From what other have told me this is a cracked emulsion tube and is probably the problem. This part is not serviceable so I went out to the junk yard and found a similar carb and ordered the correct size jet.

Still working on getting everything working though. Here is the thread about the carb.
