Re: Crusader 305 will not start

Yep, lots of gas, no gas, etc.

I just swaped coils from the working engine, it didn't help.

How about my emergency shut offs? It is a Carver and had engine shut downs for no oil pressure or overheat. But that would have to kill the spark I assume, and I am getting spark through cranking.

And yea, spark, compression, gas, even starter fluid, it must start, but we are missing something. NOT EVEN A COUGH! I have had 2 top mechanic friends spend a few hours on it and they have no idea, and i'm no slouch myself...

Out of despiration, I lit a piece of paper, blew it out and the smoked sucked right in the carb when cranking. So it's getting air....

Re: Crusader 305 will not start

1 What direction does the crank pully turn, counterclockwise??????
2 Verify plug wires, going counterclockwise AT THE CAP from #1, 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2 ,a standard rotation is clockwise from #1
Compression is marginal but it should run or attempt to.Need answers to 1 and 2

OK, rotor turns clockwise, wires going counter clockwise are 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

Crank from the front turns counter clockwise.

That verifies a reverse rotation, the only other thing is the timing. looking at the engine #1 is the first plug on the right bank. Using the method you described should set the dist in correctly.intake valve opens and closes(2nd rocker ) and the timing mark is next for TDC. rotor should be pointing to #1 position in the cap.

Re: Crusader 305 will not start

Only thing I can suggest is put a timing light on #1 wire and verify spark happens when the timing mark on the balancer comes up to the tab.Everything else posted says it should run unless timing is off.Jusy maybe the dist was never set for #1 when you removed it.

My understanding is the distributer turns the same direction on RH and Left motors. Only the firing order is different, all SBC oil pumps and dizzy rotate the same direction. I read the messages, you got spark occurring, timing light flashes, but not on the pointer, is that correct? The easiest way to verify is turn the motor by hand til the mark on the balancer lines up with pointer, check the number 1 cylinder( number 1 is always the cylinder furtherest forward, drivers side if it was in car) valves see which stroke you are on. compression stroke is after the intake closes. Each time you rotate the motor crank 360, just check the valves. Once you found the compression stroke, check the rotor and see wheres it pointing. Move the wires temporarily to get it to fire (where ever the rotor is pointing to, make that number 1 and so on), once it fires, rotate dizzy to get running smoother. To me it sounds you are off at the dizzy. This is all based on you have spark, starter fluid will fire on a nearly dead cylinder.

Re: Crusader 305 will not start

Well since you are sure that you are getting gas and obviously you have some compression, then it HAS TO BE the spark.
My guess is that the distributor is out at least one cog on the distibutor gear and that your plugs are fouled with gas and that you have possibly got a weak spark as well.

Possibly a bad cap or rotor as well. Or a bad high tension lead from your coil to the cap.

If indeed you have gas and correctly timed good spark to go along with those compression numbers, it will fire so long as you haven't flooded it and fouled the plugs.

Pull all your plugs and check them for gas. Turn the motor over a few times with them out to clear up any gas that may be lurking. Then replace them and disconnect the fuel line to your carb and plug it and then try to fire it up just with starting fluid.

That way you know its not flooding and fouling your plugs.

Just keep turning the distributor a little and keep giving it little shots of starter fluid while a buddy turns it over with the key.

On the other hand, maybe you are still sucking water from somewhere else...

Re: Crusader 305 will not start

SOLUTION!

As a last resort a friend said to put 5 or 6 squirts of oil in the cylinders to increase compression.

I did so and she started right up, after 3 months of trying everything.

We had tons of blowback coming out of the valve covers but let it run for a few hours.

She now starts right away and has no blowback.

Go figure......
