Re: Cruise the Ohio River

Thought about heading up the Ohio to Evansville but I don't know enough about the river to the north. I will say that the Cumberland is my favorite river to run so far. It is not to busy between Barkley and the Ohio and is usually pretty smooth.

Golconda to Evansville isn't a bad run... about 100 miles. Only 1 lock, but they are normally pretty quick getting folks thru (call ahead on the VHF).

There are 2 marina's you can spend the night at in Evansville.... Nu Plaza and Inland. Inland is kind of neat cause the LST325 war ship is docked next to the marina. Both marina's have food and slips.

If you (or anyone else) comes through here, just let me know. I'd be happy to hangout or cruise with ya.... the Evansville area has lots of entertaining beaches, a couple poker runs during the year, ski day and aquapolooza!

How is the river as far as being able to swim and tube? Is there somewhere I can find information on the poker runs, beaches, aquapolooza? Are there any places that you are aware of between Golconda and Evansville for food and Gas?

Were going this july 4th weekend back down to the Louisville area. Is the river usually pretty crowded on this holiday. Its my only second time on the river and I dont know how popular it is.

The river is great for watersports... just be sure to pull away from the channel when your stopping to swim, the barges sneak up fast!

The local marina is how I find out about 90% of the river activities... East Side Marine in Evansville normally has all the info about the events.

Between Evansville and Golconda, there is no place to buy food or fuel. Well, Elizabethtown, IL has a floating restraunt... but its a stones throw from Golconda.

Sorry about the late response...

The river (along with everywhere else) will be crowded this weekend. My best advice is, get to the ramp early so you don't have a line to wait in... ;)
