Price of gasoline at the pumps pretty much tracks with crude oil prices, but I never noticed if motor oil prices fluctuate the same way. What about solvents, plastics & other petrochem stuff?

How high does the price of oil have to be before synthetic motor oil becomes the economical alternative (think short-term, not long-haul economics)?

just wondering.

BTW heard this morning that OPEC is increasing production 2% on April 1. They say the ideal price is around $44/barrel. They talking about that same barrel they have us all over?

Everything goes up, if crude oil goes up. Plastics, solvents, everything.

But nowdays, some oils are made from natural gas. Yes.. gas to oil.
http://www.chemlink.com.au/gtl.htm

Ken

Everything that uses the product gets whacked. Seems to take a bit longer to hit the oil racks.
The pirates just aren't making enough $$.

Wonder if they'll ever come up with "synthetic" gasoline?
Maybe refined from "synthetic crude"?

Synthetic is defined as anything coming from a chemical reaction.

Therefore if you change natural gas to gasoline via gas to liquids (which uses chemical reactons), you will have synthetic gasoline.

It has already been done, but it was terribly expensive.

Ken

The issue is 2 things

1 US oil refinery production is almost maxed out and there are no new refinery's planned

2 - Demand - china and and india - as they modernize and increase mfg production need more oil to do so

Nothing to do about #1 except build plants in mexico where the environmentalists are not screaming at you

#2 - nothing you can do either but drill for more oil or coal

a 1% increase in the US GNP requires a .01% increase in energy needs

a 1% gnp increase in china requires a 30% increase in energy
