Crownline will not turn over - Battery is good...

I took our 2004 Crownline 240 out today for the first time since winterization. We just bought it used. It has never given the prior owner problems.
All drain plugs are closed. Low voltage signal come on. We started out of the cove and it was very sluggish. We killed the motor and there was a slight white smoke that was faint.
We checked the engine. No smells or smoke in the engine compartment. We started it back up. It appeared to run better and I hammered down a little bit more. I checked the temperature gauge, and it was at 220 degrees. I shut it down again. Then it would not start.
Hours later, it will not turn over. Could an empeller be keeping it from turning over. Battery is good.

Thanks for any help...

Welcome to iboats randy, going to need some engine and drive info. What your boat is means nothing.
What engine, what drive? Carbed, EFI? Raw water cooled or closed cooled. Serial numbers are almost mandatory with some questions.

Winterized. By whom

Would you really expect someone trying to sell you something to say, "Hey, listen. We didn't winterize it properly and now the block's cracked"? Of course they're going to tell you it never gave them any problems, they're trying to sell it...

No, but a seized engine due to overheating will...

But, all that aside, like Don has already said, we need, engine, make, model, serial number....

It's a Mercruiser 350 Mag. Raw water cooled. I don't have serial numbers with me. I can get those.

I also know the guy who sold it to us.

He drained all of the lines and put 2.5 gallons of rv anti-freeze in it. He's trustworthy and wants to pay for anything on the boat that needs to be fixed.

Impeller is the first thing you want to look at for the overheat problem, but the starting (cranking) problem has nothing to do with the impeller.

What drive?

EFI or Carbed?

I am in the middle of a similar issue.

Pull the spark plugs, disconnect the ignition coil, crank the engine.
If water comes out of any cylinders, you have to get it out and get it running out of the water as soon as possible.

Then check your exhaust risers and manifolds.

EFI

I'm wondering if it's the starter.

Does it click or clunk or make any noises when you try to start the engine?

Can you please answer more than one question a day. I asked what drive and if it was efi or carbed, one got answered, one didn't.
If you want help, you have to give us the information about what you have and exactly what it's doing so we can help you.

Pull dipstick and look to see if oil is clear and not the texture of yoghurt.
Remove plugs to see if it has water in the cylinders.
See if engine will now crank.
And the results are...............................
220 degrees and you have had a good seizure if it will not crank by starter or hand with plugs removed.

Hey, I apologize. I'm giving you what information I know at the moment. This boat is new to me and I'm not by it. I'm not as familiar with boat terminology as I am cars. I just learned what an empeller was yesterday. I was saying water pump...

It clicks and acts like it wants to turn over, but will not. I haven't pulled spark plugs yet...I'm about to go down and pull the water pump and take a look at the empeller. I'm having to look things up on the internet on how to loosen the serpentine belt, etc.

Thanks for your help. I'll tell you all I can...

It clicks and acts like it wants to turn over, but will not.

So, if it's acting like it wants to turn over, it's a heavy clunk as the starter engages the flywheel as compared to a little click of a solenoid not working. Is that correct?

We can give you all the information you need, just as soon as you can get us the engine information.
Here is the belt information I think will help you.

Let me clarify. Sorry. It clicks, but will not turn over. It sounds like the starter is engaging, but that's it.

It's a Mercruiser 350 Mag EFI. HIN: JTC52725H304
Engine serial #0M663870

If the starter is engaging, get the spark plugs out ASAP and see if there is water in the cylinders that could be hydro locking the engine. And to see if the engine will turn over.
And causing rust and other problems.

If it has water in the cylinders, does that mean I have a cracked block?

No.......

But let's find out IF there is water first and not just guess at everything along the way.
Your biggest concerns right now are:

1. Check for water in cylinders.
2. Get engine turning over.
3. Get engine started to burn the water out of the cylinders.

Re: Crownline will not turn over - Battery is good...

lets see if how much water and in what pots as it may be gasket related or you may have ingested water by exhausts too but serpentine removal is not yet to be removed as the pump may be int he drive depending on if its an alpha1 gen 2 or may be bravo.we have to know this info for definite but removal of plugs is top of the list.a compression tester will let us know what may be wrong if you can crank engine over to get some figures for each cylinder.
information is the way forward at the moment.
