Crowline keeps dying

I have a 2002 225 BR. Two weeks ago we started having trouble with it cutting out. We decided to change the fuel/water seperator filter. It was very rusty. We then took it back to the lake and it seemed to be running better. When we took it back out yesterday it hesitated to start but then ran really well. We decided to throw an anchor out, when we tried to start it up to leave it wouldn't start. We finally got it started but it kept dying until we finally had to get pulled in. Do you have any ideas of what might be wrong?

Could be many things, based on your description. Sounds like a fuel related issue- possibly a failing fuel pump, bad gas, an obstructed fuel line or pickup, or tank vent, crud clogging up the jets in the carb, many possibilities.
And that's assuming it is fuel related. It could also be electrical.

Could there be a problem if there is to much oil? I checked the dip stick and it is way over the full mark.

Is there more than 1 fuel filter?

My Crownline 2003 225 has an inline filter and a water-separating (cannister) filter. Your fuel line should come into the engine compartment down low on the drivers side of the boat. Look for an inline fuel filter low on the side of the "engine notch" in the hull, about 6 inches behind the seat.

What was in the fuel filter when you changed it?

It was rusty looking fluid.

That's not good. Means the same thing is probably in your tank. If you're lucky, that rusty stuff is plugging up your inline filter and that's the problem. But you'll want to clean the tank.

I checked the new filter/water seperator yesterday and it looks like very clean gas without rust or water in it. I checked the inline fuel filter and it looked good too. I did find that the sea water pump does not work and needs to be changed. Do you think that could be the cause of all the issues or just another problem?
