Cross-flow and loop-charged

I have 1995 Evinrude 112 Hp. I believe it is a 90 degree motor. How do I tell if it is cross-flow or loop-charged without taking the motor apart?

one way is to shine a light or insert a pencil into a spark plug hole. Loopers have flat pistons while a crossflow does not.

All of the 112's were cross flow engines.

And "All V-4 90? engines were cross flow. The 60? V-4s are loopers." answers that question. If you can't tell the differnce between a 90? engine and a 60? engine from just looking ay the powerhead, you need to take a picture of the motor and post the it on Craig's List in the For Sale section.:rolleyes:

Careful, my 140HP 90 degree V4 motor is a looper. So are all the other 120HP and 140HP 90 degree OMC motors of that type from 1985 to 1993.

You are right, I forgot about those POS, gutless, overweight fuel gussling trash that they built for a few years. Still look at those things it is no doubt they are loopers as no intake covers.

Seriously guys, if the question had been how to tell if an engine is cross flow or a looper then maybe we could get into a discussion of how to tell without taking it apart, but since the OP knew the horsepower and year model, that was all the information needed to determine which it was. He doesn't even need to take a spark plug out, look at the piston, look for deflector covers on the sides of the engine or anything else.

Yes Coolguy, that 10 hp is a cross flow. If you didn't know anything about it you could look at the outside of the engine and see the deflector covers on the side of the engine and know it was a cross flow induction engine. The first looper introduced into OMC's line up was the 55hp three cylinder engine in '68. They also introduced through hub exhaust on that engine which Mercury outboards had used for a few years successfully.

Nearly all early engines pre 70s are cross flow. The loopers for OMC showed up with the 50 cube, 3 clyinder engines, 55 hp in the late 60's, 1968 IIRC. Still most engines were cross flow clear into the late 80s.

Only the truth. They were 110 cubes to start with and so gutless that they upped them to 122 CID to try to get them to preform with the old 99 cross flows. NOT! Then to try to promote them, they decided to race them, Only they couldn't compete against the 2 liter motors from Merc or their own 99 inchers, so they created a whole class system where they only raced against themselves. So they a were gutless, poor preforming POS. Hurt feelings or otherwise, it's the truth. Oh and if you are insulted because OMC screwed the pooch again, then you need to dig up some self esteem.

For what telling the truth? If the truth is against the rules then you might as will let the liars take over now. FYI a real moderator never ever does this stuff publicly. But then maybe that's because this forum would rather be PC the have correct information for the members.

So you have a rule against hurt feelings? Where is there a guarantee against hurt feelings? Even the US Constitution doesn't cover hurt feelings.
I figure that if you go looking to have your feelings hurt, it will happen. That's what Political Correctness was created for, the tender feelings crowd. If they act stupidly and when told about it it hurts their feelings, so PC protects their feelings. Of course they will continue to act stupidly because they have the excuse of "No one told them".
