help> i have a 135 johnson outboard engine. i am getting a crossfire on cylinders 2 and 4. it looks like they are firing at TDC and 180 out if that makes any sense. please help thanks
Daviet asks a valid question about the model number: They made V4 crossflow 135 engines in the early 70's. They made a V6 looper 135 in the 2000-2006 years. Very different ignitions systems. You must be asking about the V4 model?
Whichever model it is it is a common power pack problem or a connector problem with the sensor signal either jumping between two pins in the connector, or triggering both cylinders in the power pack.
when i am just in the boat by myself it will jump up on plane with no problem. i might add that i just had the carbs rebuilt and the fuel pump rebuilt. but when i put another person in the boat it will just cough and die. i can not get the boat to get up on plane. i took the boat back to the mechanic and we put it on the dino. we marked the TDC for all 4 cylinders on the flywheel and we then checked the timing with a timing light. cylinders 1 and 3 just showed 1 and 3 but 2 and 4 showed both 2 and 4 when the light was on their sparkplug wires. we are going to check the prop to see if the planing problem is prop by changing from a 3 blade stainless steel SST prop to a 4 blade aliumin prop thanks for the help
Change the power pack. If you keep on running with this kind of ignition failure, you will lean out the cylinders and burn down your engine. At start and low rpm's it may even back-fire (sneeze) blowing gaskets and damaging reed valves.
I have seen new packs priced below 100$, both CDI and Sierra. Stay off e-bay and used parts, they may have the same problem as the one you already have.
