Hi,

First time poster, short time lurker................

My bro gave me an early 70's Crestliner yesterday. The deck is already torn out, but I can't examine the stringers as they're covered with snow. The finish looks pretty good, spit and a polish. It needs an outboard, but the trailer's pretty heavy duty. I haven't even measured it yet, but I'm guessing it's around 17 feet.

Wish me luck!

Ken

Looks good!
Just look at those stringers as soon as you get the chance. Chances are they are probably rotten too.

You will find a wealth of knowledge on here and you will be able to do anything as long as you take the time to research some threads and see how others have gone about doing things!

Good Luck!!

We all were/are firstimers here. this is the best place for rebuiling your boat. If the deck is already tore out replaceing the stringers would be the next step, looking at the age of the boat they may rotted as well, may want to check the transom as well:cool::)

I have a 79 Muskie, but I read that from the plate that gives mfg information, capacity, weight, etc. I would have know it was a Muckie without that plate. Can't zoom in enough on your pic to see if yours says Muskie along with the Crestliner. I guess I'm wondering how you know it's a Muskie. Like the yellow steering.

There's a "Muskie" decal on the passenger side dash. I'm guessing this thing is 1970-73. The outboard is a 72 Johnson, someone told me. It's a 60 hp with some kind of magnetic selector in the bottom end. The motor is pooched, so if this job is worthwhile, I'd be looking for a used 70 hp'ish 4 stroke.

I sure hope I don't have to gut the transom and stringers. What's the best way to check this? Hammer a screw driver into the wood to see how much resistance there is? I guess I could hang off the outboard and see if that moves.

Edit: sorry for the large pic, I'm a bit of a spaz when it comes to image resizing.

Welcome to the forum. Great looking tri hull. But aren't they all? :) Look for soft stringers, also cracks in the transom. Some will be on the top of the transom some on the inside. Give some good whacks with a hammer, and see how soft it its. Chances are you will have to replace them. But don't panic, it's all good. One step at a time.

Wait! Don't scuttle her yet. Let people see some pics of the cracks. It might not be so bad as you think.
