Hi,

This may come over as crazy and I appreciate it is, but I'm thinking of building a boat out of iPad's and iPhones.

Do you think this would be possible?

I would love your ideas on possible designs?

I work in marketing hence the reason and not know where to start.

Any ideas would be most welcomed.

I'd be looking to sail the boat from England to France over the channel.

Pick the existing hull of yer choice,...
Mix up some epoxy peanut butter, 'n glue yer phones All over the outside of it....
Then,...
Launch it,....

If it don't sink from the added weight, yer good to go....

If it does sink,...
Find a Bigger hull, 'n start all over again....

A boat hulll entirely of nothing but iPads and iPhones? "No", but that aside, sure you could build one that looks that way. Just like laying up a balsa cored glass hull. Take your mold, spray in resin (no colored gelcoat), glue in an entire layer of iPads & iPhones neatly arranged, then finish just like a regular FRP hull (glass & resin). It would be very heavy, but for an 'over the top' marketing ploy sure it could be done.

Finally someone who can think clearly. The problem is not to build a boat out of iPads but to make it look like you did. That's a much easier problem to solve.

I would do it a bit different and start with an aluminum hull to reduce the overall weight. The iPads/iPhones would then be glued above the waterline and encased in clear casting epoxy if they're required to work. Add a couple of outboards and you can easily cross the channel to France.

Anything else will end in failure. There is no way to actually build a boat out of phones and pads and have it be structurally sound.

I work in an industry where crazy creativity is explored for experience as well. We'd probably write the idea off pretty quickly due to the simple fact of cost vs. value. While there are plenty of discarded iPhones out there, probably not as many iPads just yet. Once you do the design work of getting the pieces assembled ... then making them float ... then powering them ... you wind up with a piece that makes people look for a moment, but does essentially nothing.

Make all the screens face out, and synch them up to display a functional image and float that ... there's cool factor that would work for some schtick in the right application. But it would cost you IMMENSELY.

Nearly anything else winds up being "modern art" of some category or another, which in my opinion is generally an obtuse expression that appeals to a very limited group.

question, why ipads and iphones? after some thought, its in my opinion that a fiberglass structure with the ipads used as a core would work effectively, clear gelcoat, 1-2 bid of a lightweight cloth, ipads (protected with screen out), flox (kinda like p.butter), main fiberglass layup. (if strength is a issue, then add a core material (i reccomend a nomex or pvc foam core) then additional glass (or carbon) bids to finnish it off then vac bag the whole thing. max bang for the least amount of weight. OR..... run all the bids behind the ipads out of carbon with a thicker (.500-.750) core material with vac bag. that way you would save the weight of the heavy glass with the same strength and then the wight of the ipads wont be such a big deal.

In my home town of Sunderland in England which is on the river Wear there is a boat that sunk many years ago. It is made entirely of concrete and I beleive the thoery was that anything would float if it could displace its own weight in water. Well, if thats true then I guess its wrong.

My point being that you would not be the first to try something crazy, its been done before. Plenty of duct tape, lots of glue and dont put anything heavy on the transom.
