Crank end cap seals

I just replaced the end cap seals on my 98 200hp ( figured it was a good time since I had the power head off for motor mount replacment) My ? is How can I check the new seal for proper sealing... before I put it back together ..

tha two seals and o-ring making up tha end cap assembly?.. if so, not really anyway ta "test" 'em that i know of.....

Also the manual doesn't mention any kind of sealant for the adapter plate gasket and the power head gasket do you guys think that it would be foolish to reassemble without sealant? I was thinking Permatex aviation sealant sense it is required to be applied around the upper mounts any thoughts ?
