Re: Craigslist Boat Sellers

That's true... sometimes. When a guy is asking $12K for a boat and I'm offering him $7500., there's a reason and I want him to know what it is. You never know what that dialogue will accomplish. If one of my points is that the mani's are overdue for replacement, he may offer to buy the parts if I put them in, or vice versa. If part of my offer is based on the boat needing $3k worth of canvas and he has a friend in the trade who'll give him a break, that might change the negotiation, too. The windlass that I'll have to swap out because it only accepts rope and not chain? Well, he may have a source for a good used one. Get my drift? .....

Negotiation is a dance until one (or both) of the partners says, 'No more. You now have my best offer.' That was the case here. Stalled..

The point the earlier poster was making is simply that there is nothing wrong with the "software"....but sometimes the "liveware" messes things up. :)
Craig's List connected you with a vendor selling something that you are interested in acquiring; job done.

That you and the seller then had a less than satisfactory experience beyond that, is something that you are prepared to hang on the seller and on Craig's List.
An impartial observer might have a different spin. ;)

Okay, I see. My complaint had more to do with the seller than the medium. But, part of that issue is that the service is free. Any yahoo can advertise anything they want at any price they want. No forethought, research, logic or sanity required. I haven't had such issues with services that charge for listings, though I'm going back a few years.

+1^^^^^

You are 100% correct! When the advertising service is free, it becomes an open invite for unintelligent people to introduce their wares, and clog the marketplace with junk. You don't see this phenomenon in the publications that require the seller to pay for his advertising space.

Obviously, no one in their right mind would spend money on an ad trying to convince someone to drag away the rotting hulks we see in our "TLC Needed" thread. I was compelled to start using C-list, when after eight years of doing business on fleabay...I could no longer justify the expense as a seller. By my most conservative estimate, I have saved over $2,000 in listing/paypal fees by using C-list in the last two years.

This is the reason I am quick to defend the site. No personal attack meant at the OP...was just venting about the public at large who propagate nonsense about products and services that morons abuse, and said morons who should ultimately be held responsible for their actions.

Case in point; the old lady who spilled hot coffee on her crotch and won millions. Utter B.S.!

Re: Craigslist Boat Sellers

JoLin in case you didn't know you can block the texter from texting you. Anyhow it's good to see that people are pretty much the same across the states. I have had the same experience with boats. I buy and sell all the time on CL and every once in a while comes across the stuff described here. One guys transom was literally rotting off and I could pick the wood out. He said, "This baby just needs a little TLC and it's brandy new." Yeah...he said "brandy new." Another time I was looking at gauges and found some for $100. I can buy the same new for $129. I told the guy I'd buy his for $50 stating the obvious. He said, I paid XXX for them. Well buddy you overpaid. As of late, I needed a cooler and went to my fav place -- CL -- with the hope of finding a deal. In this case the seller had an Igloo for $100 OBO or should I say in the vernacular, "THIS LISTS FOR $225 AT PASSPRO. NEEDS SOME TLC!" The unit was filthy, had a missing latch, and had a small gouge in the plastic. I looked it over and said, "I can offer you $40 for this." You would have thought I shot the guy. $40 he said...It's on CL for $100. I explained I could buy a BRAND NEW 150 quart cooler for $80 and this one is worth about $40. No deal.

The next guy in line had 3 coolers for $50. A really good deal and one was huge and all of them brand new. I emailed him and he said...I have 100 (new) coolers available for $300. Now that a great deal but what the heck am I going to do with 100 coolers? Yeah, I thought about buying all of them but then I would have to deal with all the buyers. Still...I offered him $100 for all of them.

Today however I bought a brand new (almost) small center console for my skiff. Probably worth about $200. I got it for $95. I am very happy.

Re: Craigslist Boat Sellers

I do like Craigslist for both buying and selling . . . the people factor is consistent regardless of the media used. The fact that CL is Internet based versus the hard copy of 10 years ago, does make it easier for Spammers, etc and unrealistic sellers. Overall, I think it is still a good thing.

I sold my last boat via CL . . . (with a busted engine); listed it as such, etc. I had to weed thru some yahoos along the way, but overall the boat was sold in 10 days to a guy who really wanted the boat and had an engine to put in it. I also bought my current boat thru CL; again . . deal done in a week.

Hey, me too. I hope nobody thinks I wish it didn't exist. I use it all the time for buying and selling. Picked up a Toro snowblower yesterday in great condition.

Definitely proving the point that there are always several sides to any story and just because it is on the internet doesn't mean it is accurate.....starting with your post.
If you take the time to read the details of that case, any sympathy you had for the large corporation involved would probably evaporate.
You can read about it at => The famous/infamous ?McDonald?s Coffee Spill Lawsuit? revisited

It's the internet so it must be true.... :)

I have spilled hot coffee on my crotch and can tell you it's very painful. Regardless of who made the coffee it was MY fault for doing something not very smart. I have to admit that even after reading the story (and I feel for the lady) I don't side with the end result and believe one makes their own decisions and lives with the consequence. That is not saying there is not purposeful neglect induced by some people and some organizations but one should know you cannot (should not) hold a flimsy cup of really hot coffee between your legs. Granted that statement will cause disagreement and discussion but it is my opinion. Same scenario with hundreds of other things like you should not use a hair dryer while showering or shave with a sharp razor while driving. Perhaps not smoke while pumping gas or drive with your eyes closed or maybe put a 300HP OB on your 16 footer and wonder why is sank. The world is full of people that don't think before jumping and other people that post on CL thinking there junk is their treasure.

Re: Craigslist Boat Sellers

I used to love looking at boats on CL. I sold an old Mercedes I'd bought used and didn't want anymore. I posted it and within 8 minutes the phone was ringing. Guy and girl drove all the way from Arkansas to get it, and the damn thing wasn't running right when they test drove it. I lost 1500 on that deal, but cars are cars. They were good honest people and were nice enough to buy it even though they had to limp it all the way back to Arkansas. Come to find out, it needed a new fuel filter. Ouch.

Personally, It sounds like the seller got to much info from the buyer here. There is no reason anyone selling anything needs to know what my offer is based on or not based on.

I have to disagree with you on this one. If I am selling something and you make a lesser offer then I want to know what qualifies the lesser offer besides something being pulled out of thin air.

You should really watch this documentary
HOT COFFEE, a documentary feature film

Or at least read this, which is allot of what the case was about:
Tort reform - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Here are some photos from that law suite too.
Hot Coffee - Plot Mistress

As you can see nothing is as simple as the coffee was too hot....

I agree. Knowledge is power and if I have something not priced right because of something I have overlooked, I would like to know that.

Good thinking, buying a snowblower before the onset of winter usually prevents large snowfalls :D

Perhaps and it's all very interesting but I stand behind what I said. I suppose I could have sued Mercedes Benz in that I had placed the sealed travel mug on the lower part of the steering wheel (it fit perfectly) but when I hit the tiny bump backing out of the garage the mug fell onto my lap. I guess I could have also sued the mug company in that the top popped off. And may I could have sued the builder of the house because the garage floor did not perfectly match the driveway. Then again, I could have sued my employer since they are the reason I was up in the first place or perhaps sue my wife because I bought the house and have a mortgage which means I need a job. Or the real estate agent that sold me the house or or or.... ;-)

Lets not have any companies responsible for anything. After all if you weren't fat you would not have needed to take that fen-phen in the first place.....

That's why I did it. The 'spell' from my last purchase wore off.

That's why I did it. The 'spell' from my last purchase wore off.
