I pressure and vacuum test all lower units that come into my shop for service no matter what the job is or what the oil looks like. In my opinion it just makes good sense to make it a complete job.

Jim

I've got a 68 40HP had the same problem. I had it marine welded and surface skimed for a good finish. It was quite cheap and it works fine. Put a plug into the drive shaft hole to stop any filings and rubbish going into into the the gears

Cheers
Snapperman

Hi Snapperman
I put a paper plug in the gear shaft hole when I left it with the welder, The surfaces are not as bad as they appear in the picture and I reckon I can flatten down the welded area by hand so that should be OK. :)
