Crack in Lower Gearcase

I seem to have a problem.... I have an 86 Force 50 with a crack in the lower gearcase about an inch or two from the vent. I am positive that this was from the lack of care of the previous owner. I am also positive that the motor has not been submerged or started in the water.

So...

What can be done about this? Can this be welded? Or should the entire gearcase be removed:confused:

possibly welded, depends on location and severity.
Remove the lower and take it to a marine shop.

Re: Crack in Lower Gearcase

So i was messin' round inspecting the "crack" and I really got a good look at it. There is no crack going through anything. It was just a chip. Not too deep but approximately the size of a quarter.

is this something to worry about? And what is the lower gearcase made of? It doesn't look like metal. almost has the feeling of thick ceramics.

Your lower is made out of an aluminum alloy. It's possible that someone put bondo or marine tex to cover an old ding. I would clean it and cover it with marine tex. If done properly, marine tex will stay on forever.
