Cover up for "wood" wrapped aluminum trim.

Hello all. I'm in the process of redoing my 1989 Smokercraft Fazer. She's all gutted and most hull repairs and sealing completed. I'm going to cut all my plywood floor, panels and consoles this week.
One of my many conundrums is what to do wit all the aluminum trim etc inside. It has the Mactac type vinyl stuck to it real good. I have a friend that can get me the 3m Carbon fiber vinyl wrap for less than 1/3 the going rate. Problem is it'll be a 3 to 4 week wait.
Has anyone painted the old "wood" vinyl with any success? I have to get the boat back together by July 15th for vacation.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Sliver

PS. The old vinyl is faded some but is not peeling anywhere and there is too much of it to simply peel it all off.

sliver240, I have no idea what you are talking about. So post some pictures for everything to see what you are dealing with. That way we can understand your questions and provide better ideas and suggestions. There are some great experienced iboaters on these forums, but I haven't met any mind-readers yet. But then I having bet all the iboaters either :noidea:

Post those pictures for us to see. JMHO

Never seen good results from painting over or re-wrapping vinyl over vinyl that had started peeling at all.

Gutted. Not too much pitting. Tomorrow if I can find a helper I'll be rebuking rivets. I should start a reno thread!

Man you are ambitious!!!! Doing all this work by July 15th you have a very fun filled couple weeks!!!. To answer you question, I would not try and paint vinyl. Is there a reason you can't get your friend's hook up before the end of June (3 to 4 weeks)? Also, what about using some kind of vinyl carpet to replace the current vinyl. I guess we the ultimate questions is: what is your final intentions/dream for this boat?

I am going to have to kick it into high gear. Make time like Budski flips boats out!lol Last year I did the transom and got the boat back together 12 hours before we left.hehe

As for my intensions for this boat. Rebuild it better than factory. I'm adding aluminum bracing and support under the decks and enlarging the rear casting deck. Encapsulating all plywood in West Systems epoxy, I did 3 coats on the transom last year. Vinyl on the horizontal surfaces and carpet on the verticles.
I bought this boat 5 years ago, it's powered by a 115 Suzuki(1989) and is a great rig on the northern Ontario lakes. But... I live 15 mins from Lake Erie and no amount of mods on it will make it a big lake boat. Really have to pick your days for the big water.

A quick update and some pics. My friend got the right colour but not in the Carbon Fiber I wanted. Time was short so I used it anyways. I went right over the old wrap and used a rough 3m wheel in a drill to knock down some of the bad spots. I cheated on finishing the boat and was a day behind my deadline. Still have to redo the consoles and finish building the rear storage/casting deck.

Nice work. Did you put the carpet under both edge pieces of the gunnel? Thinking of doing something similar

Yes I did. I used the pieces I peeled off as templates. You need to cut it to the curve so it won't pucker.

Nice, was your rub rail sung? Looking at mine I noticed the rub rail piece seems to fit pretty snug. Don't know if the carpet/vinyl would fit under it. Did you have some extra space or have to do anything special to it?

The rub rail fit snug. Make sure you use rivets long enough to grab properly. Also make sure the carpet is tucked under. The rail was one of the easier jobs on this project!lol

Did you have to bend it any to get it to fit over the carpet?

I am looking forward to finding an easier job on my project. LOL

Well I have to rebuild my consoles and remake my larger rear deck yet. I also near sunk it the first night on vacation. I missed an old fishfinder screw hole in my mad rush to go... Amazing how much water can come into a boat in 6 hours!! Lesson learned!
