My boat is in a mariner, stays in the salt water all the time.
There are barnicles on the stern drive.
With the boat came a canvas bag with a draw string. You apparantly raise the leg, slip the bag over it, pull the drawstring, then lower the leg.
Tried it a couple of times but bag seemed too small and it was a pain in the butt, so left it.
Thinking of getting a bigger bag that will fit more easily, but before I do so, has any one else ever tried this , and if so, was it sucessful in keeping off barnicles etc. Did you use canvas, or shade cloth or plastic or......
Just seeking others experience before I make a decision.
Cheers
Phillip

Re: Cover Outdrive

Kiwi Phil,

I've seen quite a few of those bags at my local marina, some of the boatowners who use them (mostly sterndrives) tell me they are a waste of time, this is what they have told me:

1. virtually impossible to clean and dry outdrive before fitting bag, which defeats the purpose.

2. A pain in the a** to remove and refit for every outing.

3. Much more suited to outboards that can be tilted clear of the water but then the bag is not really needed.

4. Boats by law (in Australia), have to be slipped every 2 years anyway - good time to clean and paint etc.

By the way, what ever happenned to your 'aussie humor' thread?

Aldo

Re: Cover Outdrive

I think the idea is to keep light away from the drive thus preventing growth of stuff.

Depending on rules & regulations you could use an antifouling paint.

Or, even better, use the boat more so nothing gets a chance to stick to it :)

Re: Cover Outdrive

Hi Dunaruna,and UU.
Thanks for your replies.
I guess you are right about the pain in the a**se these things would present.
I had wondered, before I gave the idea completely away, what our US cuzzies would come up with. There is nothing better than a lateral thinker from the other side of the planet to come up with a brain wave that saves us time and money. We will see what happens in the nexr day or so.
I am slipping it in another 2 weeks (after 8mths). need to check the anodes so will clean and re anti-foul.
Re the Aussie Humor. Well....I got the bullet from the Admin with the 1st one, so I thought it best I don't press my luck by sending a 2nd. I enjoy the site too much to be exported to oblivion.
I thought the jokes were pretty good actually, and there are about 60 in the collection.
I had wondered if I shouldn't call for e-mail addresses and then I can send them out personally.
Thanks again for the imput.
Cheers
Phillip
