With the 3pm low tide, it would probably be a sandbar weekend for me BUT it looks like I'm headed towards the brine this weekend. My parents bought a place in Cape May and have been bugging me to go down.

Re: Cove next to River Winds, Delaware River, NJ

Hiya guys,

I was wondering if I could ask you guys, Pole Position in particular about the clubs you belong to. I am going to be in receipt, hopefully this winter of my new to me boat (74 Penn Yan 23' Avenger). I have been drydocked for over 25 yrs with out a boat. I used to boat in Lower Delaware where my parents have a shore home. Deciding on getting a boat it became apparent to me that getting a boat and only getting to use it sporadically over the summer when I am able to get down the shore didn't make sense to me. So if i were to get a boat, I decided that I would have to have the boat close to home so that I could actually use it more then 3 or 4 weekends if kept down the shore.
So I have been researching the Delaware river and local marinas to see what was here and what its like to boat here near Philly, I live in Marlton.
I am accustom to boating in the Indian River, Rehoboth bay, Delaware bay. The boat I chose is a boat that has blue water capability as well as shallow draft 18", for boating in the shallow bays and rivers in the area. I am going to be introducing my two young sons to the world of boating and looking to create some great family bonding time for my boys and girls and wife. My thinking was that having the boat local to me would allow me to get out and cruise and do some boating, fishing or crabbing, if its possible up this way, and just being able to enjoy the boat more even if its just for an hour or two here or there thru out the week and on the weekends.

So that's my back story. I'm looking to hook up with some local folks who share my ideals on family and boating. I want to be able to keep the boat in the water and use it for various excursions, site seeing and exploring the area, fishing if its feasible, (never fished up here) and just hanging out. I stopped by the marinas like Dredge, Clarks and Hargrove, didnt talk to anyone, just drove by and stopped and walked around the facilities, and only recently found clubs in National Park and other boating clubs. So how does one go about getting into these types of clubs? Any info you guys can give me would be much appreciated.

The best way to check out the boat clubs and marinas is to go out and ask around. Most clubs are more than willing to help you out.If you're interested in Westville Power Boat, let me know and I'd be glad to show you around. It's open after 5 pm most nights and I'm a block away.Brian

Hey Brian, I'm going to start checking out the clubs and marinas in the area in early March. I checked out the 3 marinas in Delran. All 3 are nice and pretty much all cost around the same except for Dredge which was considerably more.
So what is the boating / fishing / crabbing scenario in these parts? Like I said before I boated exclusively in lower DE before.

Westville power boat club was $20 a foot for dockage this year.A lot of people hang out at the cove on weekends. There are alot of events at the different clubs;opening days, barbecues, clambakes, pig roasts and crab festivals.Always have a blast at most of em.Fishing consists of striped bass in spring, catfish carp, eels, perch, bluegills etc.Crabbing you would have to go south further into some brackish water.

Wow, most of the prices i saw were $30/ft and higher, and the club is closer to my house them Delran. What are the membership fees? Are there any slips available next year?
Is somebody around now at the club or does it close up for the winter?
I know that the club is near Hargrove marina, correct?
I prefer a family environment of the club verses the std marinas...

Another question I have, it's been years since I was on the water, the boat Im getting is a DE registered boat, even though I have done all my boating in LSD, I want to have the boat here to be able to use it. So I will most likely register it in NJ. I'll do the coast guard safety course and get tow insurance. Will I need to get a license for fishing in the area? I will probably run south to the bay for fishing, but wanna try fishing up around here too.
As far as crabbing I will probably do that down south, I can take the boat to RRehoboth bay and IRB during the summer for some long weekends to a couple days for vacation,

Membership is $125,docks are avaiable but there is a seniority system. We have docks on both sides of the creek, you would be on far side.We have a 15 foot taxi for that. You need a freshwater license above the Barry bridge and your boat must be insured to dock here just like any other marina. The club is located further up Big Timber creek about 5 blocks from 295 bridge. We are open all year.
