I can't get my torque wrench with a socket to fit onto the coupler nuts on my Ford 302 (merc 225s, 1974). Is there a special tool, or do I guess on the torque? Any tips?

I'm assuming that you have an OMC electric stringer I/O? Also sounds like you might be asking two questions. I can't be sure. As far as the torque, I'd check the manual. As far as the socket size, how'd you get them off in the firstplace?

The outdrive is a pre-Alpha. I used a boxed end wrench to remove the nuts. I know what the torque should be, but there is not room for a socket and torque wrench because of the shape of the coupler. I thought some sort of attachment with a box-end on one end and a hole for the torque wrench on the other (to offset the torque wrench)might be available? I'm sure I'm not the first person to replace a coupler, so there must be a way to do it.

Use Your "Calibrated Elbow" to set the Torque...........

It's Much More Important that they're torqued Evenly, rather than To Spec........

In other words,.....It's the Coupler,... Not Headbolts,.........
A Torque Wrench Isn't Really Needed for the Coupler Bolts............. ;)

I will install a nut on a stud without the coupler in place and torque it per normal. Then with a wrench I could learn what that torque feels like to "calibrate my elbow". Thanks again for the help!

You may be able to use a crow foot wrench on your torque wrench but it would cause a slight change in applied torque. Like Bondo said just use a calibrated elbow. Old mechanics like Bondo and myself get a pretty good feel for how much to tighten a bolt and a torque wrench ain't absolutely needed in every situation.

Buttanic, thanks fot the input. It is experience that give you experts the knowledge of what is critical and what can "be close enough."
