been searching through the aluminum boat painting threads, tons of info. i have a 84 crestliner nordic, the two tone paint is intact and not peeling at all, it is however Fugly. I wish to paint over the Brown stripe as it is very faded. Can someone summarize the benefits/disadvantages of painting over the original paint vs stripping the whole thing? the original paint is chalking. what could be used to fill in the few chips that are in the brown stripe before painting?crestliner.jpg

Re: couple paint questions

Its easy to bond new paint to old paint, but bonding to aluminum requires special prep and priming.

Sand the original paint smoothe so it''ll take a new topcoat. Prime bare spots with self-etching primer. Then paint right over the top.

Re: couple paint questions

Hey thanks Jim, i was hoping for that. What is a decent quality paint to use? i'm only going to paint that one stripe all the way around the boat so i'm ok with spending a few bucks on paint, is there something that is significantly tougher or better looking that rustoleum? what grit sanding would you recomend and wet or dry. also, what should i fill the chips in with? is there some sort of filler that will remain flexible that would fill in paint chips on an aluminumber hull, OVER existing paint? Thanks!

Re: couple paint questions

Rustoleum, with the added acrylic enamel hardener, yields an extremely durable and glossy finish. Multiple Tin Boat users here on iBoats have had great success with it especially when adding the hardener. It enriches the gloss, hardens the surface and speeds the cure time by up to 40%. Check out page #10 in my resto thread listed below for the details on how to apply. to prep chips in the paint just sand with 180# grit paper to feather em out and use Self etching primer to cover any bare aluminum spots. I would always recommend washing the surface with a 50/50 White Vinegar/Water mix after sanding. I would also recommend Priming all areas with Bare Metal Primer that are to receive a Finish Coat of Paint even if they have a good coat of existing paint. That's my humble opinion.

Like I said, I cover it all on Page#10 in my "My Flamingo" thread listed in my Signature below.
It's their Oil Based Rustoleum Professional sold at all Lowe's and HD stores. Less than $30 a gallon. Hardener is sold at Tractor Supply. $15.00.
