Well i posted a thread on here about her not starting up, now that it starts i think i may have a bad fuel pump but not sure how to narrow it down from it being a fuel pump issue or a carb issue. If i prime the system with a primer bulb it gets gas into the carb bowl but im not sure if its pumping into the motor. Secondly when we were running on carb cleaner to make sure that it would actually run since the fuel isnt going in, we noticed that there was oil leaking out around an area near the headgasket. any other thoughts about what it could be? thanks for the help

Perhaps you could remove the fuel supply line at the carb, and, in a safe manner, turn the engine over, without starting, and see if the fuel pump pumps. Please be safe at all times.

Did you do a compression or leakdown test?

yes compression is great. Im going to try your idea tomorrow morning. A local shop has the fuel pump in stock if it is that. Cars are much easier to diagnose than these old boats!! I have had more problems with this than any of the cars in my career as a mechanic!!

Car mechanics nowadays may have never seen a carbureator.

Here is what I would do.
Crank the engine over several times (you said it won't start right?)

Open up the top of the carb and see if the bowl is filled.
If it is, then you need to clean out all the jets, holes, tubes with a piece of thin wire.

If the bowl does not fill with gas, check for collapsed fuel lines (old neoprene does funny things).
You could fill the carb with gas while the top is off and reassemble.

I feel your pain Raven, I had an 83 Bayliner Capri with a Volvo Penta AQ125. I had that boat for four years and was ALWAYS working on it. Sold it last month and got a boat with an outboard. :D

Yup, if you can't fix it, settle for second best ................... an outboard.
iboats has a lot of forums for outboards that don't work. ;)
