I currently have a 1988 procraft bass boat with a yamaha 150 o/b. Im looking to get a bigger boat like a deck boat or bowrider to take out friends and family.im looking for something atleast 20ft long preferably around the 23ft range. I would like something fast, like the 65mph range. Im considering a jet boat like the seadoo speedster 200 or a yamaha but ive read that they have bad gas mileage so im not sure. Does anyone know how fast the yamahas and sugar sand jet boats go?

Could you guys throw out some recommendations? the boat doesn't have to be new but i don't want anything older then 2000

It will take big bucks to find a boat that size and weight to run 65 mph...
Big difference than a light bass rig..

Re: could i get some boat recomendations???

ive heard the seadoo speedsters can get up around 68mph with the 430hp jet. it doesnt necissarily have to be 65mph but its gotta get up into the 50's i dont want anything slower than my bassboat(55mph). are jets generally faster or slower than sterndrives? im lookin to spend no more than $40,000.

Jet propulsion is less efficient than a prop. Therefore it takes more power and ultimately more fuel for a jet propelled boat to go as fast as prop boat.

Here is a test report of the Speedster 200...58mph top speed....out of 430 hp. What does you bass boat have on it for an engine?...only 150 hp. I think the point has been made. Obviously hull design and weight play into this also however, the test report is certainly worth looking at.

Regardless of all of that these boats seem very nice. I like the look of some of the latest SeaDoos I have seen. The fit and finish is good and the fun factor is certainly there.

For the reasons you are looking for a bigger boat I would look at a sterndrive or outboard powered boat. I would be very surprised if you find a boat that meets the requirements you stated that will go much more than 55mph.

i agree on the speed issue, i have a 1999 Chris Craft 230 deckboat, 5.7 volvo. 45 mph top speed with 4 on board, 40 with 10 on board. rated for 13 people. 13 is very crowded.

I think that just about any sport orientated bow rider would serve you well. Pretty much everything in the size range you are looking will be an I/O.

I am a fan of Four Winns. I saw an H200SS ripping around the lake this past Sunday. It looked pretty nice, and sounded good.

I also really like the Cobalts in the size range you are looking at. There was also one of those on the lake the other day. It looked really nice also.

I haven't seen too many Regals in that size range but at the boat show a few months back I was looking at their sport orientated boat. The RS I think is what it was called.

With big motor the bass boat based fish-n-ski jobs like Ranger and Skeeter will be faster than almost any I/O bowrider.

KCook is right. The O/B 150-200hp F/S set-ups are nice. But if you want to get away from the bass boat look, I would look for an older 21-23' Baha bowrider with a 7.4/Bravo set-up. Yea, it's going to suck gas, but will meet your criteria all day long. The jets are really neat boats but you do loose 30-40% of your effective horsepower to the parasitic jet pumps. Lots of 5.7l BRs out there if you can live with 45-55 mph.

If you want an insanely fast boat setup, check out a boat the is setup for barefoot watering skiing. They pull barefoot skiers at 40-45 mphs and their cruising speed usually hit your target of 60+ mph. I have only been on one a single time in the Sacramento Delta. Definitely not my cup of tea.

Go for a test drive and find out. You're entitled to a test drive. If they refuse then it ain't the dealer you want to do business with.

Re: could i get some boat recomendations???

The Bravo is not a motor, it is an outdrive designed to handle more horsepower that the standard Alpha 1. Most small blocks (5.7/350) get the Alpha while big blocks (7.4/454) get the Bravo. The reason for my original suggestion was your desire for 65mph with passengers in a 23' boat. Personally, I would look at a nice used 20' F/S with a 150/200hp O/B. There might be a 21' out there, but have not seen one, nor have I seen one with a 250hp O/B. Also, do not give up on the jets. They also can meet your criteria, but they are a different beast and are not for everyone. They do consume an amazing amout of fuel, they can be very hard to navigate off-plane and insurance can be higher on them (PWC stigma). On the other hand, they are lighter, turn at high speed on a dime, have no lower unit to drive into a rock, are easy to work on and the two engine models give ya a spare to get home. I highly suggest a few test rides before purchasing anything.

Sea Ray 205 sport with the 5.0 mpi 260 hp I/O. Speed is appx 54 mph, and room for 8. It's a very nice bowrider, and we have been absolutely thrilled with ours so far. Well made, solid boat.

Get the sunpad/aft bench seat.

Re: could i get some boat recomendations???

I would really like a jet but im not sure about the gas mileage. The seadoo speedster gets like 1.67mph at WOT and like 2.50 cruising but the yamaha sx 230HO which is 8mph slower(50mph) gets 2.40mpg at WOT. i run in a lot of rivers and once im away from the dock a little ways it gets deep but some places there are rocks and trees and stuff to avoid right were i put in so the jets would be nice because there are no props to tear up.

i know yamaha has their jets down pretty good but what about seadoo? do they have many engine problems? Are they made well? the price of the seadoo really has me, its got 430hp and its only $29,000 vs. the 320hp yamaha that is $40,000.
