I've joined the club I hoped to avoid. Last week short ride out of the harbor and on the way back in my engine stalled. I restarted but knew something was wrong made it back to the dock with that sick feeling in my gut. I hoped against the odds that all was not as it appeared to be. I am not certain if the OMS pump failed or it overheated. I say this because before restarting at home I wanted to be certain it would be run with oil so I started it with a 50 to 1 premix and did a compression test. Before doing so I drained the carb bowls to make sure the premix would reach the block while testing. The fuel coming out of the bowls did not appear to have been oiled. Does the oil mix after the bowls? If so I tend to think overheating may have been the cause. The top two port cylinders have 45lbs the rest are at about 100lbs. I took the port heads off today and of course the cylinders were scored. Also on the heads two of the water passages were clogged. The estimates to rebuild or purchase a powerhead are more than the engine is worth. This is a nice clean engine with relatively low hours.I have a few questions of course. I have worked on quite a few outboards but not one this big with so much at stake( my fishing season). By the way my hot alarm did sound but I have had an ongoing issue with false hot alarms for as long as I have had the engine(4 years). Mabey they were not false after all.
1) If I do the work myself what cost am I looking at?
2) Can I get away with just pulling out the two port pistons replacing if needed then getting the two holes bored and replacing the pistons with new rings?
Look forward to your replies, Thanks in advance.
