I've joined the club I hoped to avoid. Last week short ride out of the harbor and on the way back in my engine stalled. I restarted but knew something was wrong made it back to the dock with that sick feeling in my gut. I hoped against the odds that all was not as it appeared to be. I am not certain if the OMS pump failed or it overheated. I say this because before restarting at home I wanted to be certain it would be run with oil so I started it with a 50 to 1 premix and did a compression test. Before doing so I drained the carb bowls to make sure the premix would reach the block while testing. The fuel coming out of the bowls did not appear to have been oiled. Does the oil mix after the bowls? If so I tend to think overheating may have been the cause. The top two port cylinders have 45lbs the rest are at about 100lbs. I took the port heads off today and of course the cylinders were scored. Also on the heads two of the water passages were clogged. The estimates to rebuild or purchase a powerhead are more than the engine is worth. This is a nice clean engine with relatively low hours.I have a few questions of course. I have worked on quite a few outboards but not one this big with so much at stake( my fishing season). By the way my hot alarm did sound but I have had an ongoing issue with false hot alarms for as long as I have had the engine(4 years). Mabey they were not false after all.
1) If I do the work myself what cost am I looking at?
2) Can I get away with just pulling out the two port pistons replacing if needed then getting the two holes bored and replacing the pistons with new rings?
Look forward to your replies, Thanks in advance.

Cant happen, old wifes tale....

Depends on what parts you replace......

No ...On a 60? V-6 block always have it pressure tested for internal leakages before any repair done to block. If it passes then you can bore and rering if needed.

Thanks for your replies, even Sparkiedude. Faztbullet, what do you mean "Can't happen ,old wifes tale." I did some searching, both soul and parts. I have decided to do a complete rebuild. I found a shop which has a kit, all bearings, seals, pistons , rods and gaskets for about 1200.I started taking her apart this weekend, this will take a while as work will certainly interfere with this project. I will speak to my local technician regarding where to take the block for testing and boring. When I know my bore I can then order my parts. Thanks again for your replies, I do appreciate them.

Way, they mean that an OMS failure would not damage just a single cylinder or two. Now if there really was no oil mixed in at the carb bowls, all the cylinders would have suffered damage. It is likely your damage was caused by overheating or lean running caused by dirty carbs. Obviously all these need to be addressed if you do decide to repair the block.

Watch some of those kits as they get stripped down to keep prices low. The kits I sell have every bearing,gasket,seal,o-ring,rod bolts, carb kits, impeller and pistons sizes of your choice for just a little more than that......

I did find fuel leaking down the side of one of the port carbs, not certain of its origin. I figure where fuel leaks out air leaks in. I do plan on all new gaskets and rebuilding all of the carbs.

I agree with faz on not taking the cheapest route..sometimes it is well worth spending a little extra to do it right and get quality parts. there are different gasket materials and lesser quality bearings and such.
