I have looked at a few BigTwin 35's from 1957-58... I have noticed a varying amount of white corrosion near the head gaskets on some... also the paint peeling in that area, on some... I guessed that the paint peeling was overheating maybe. what is the corrosion about...? Age? Thanks.

PS. Ever get your finger caught in the crack when the cowl comes down? I did... don't do it... it hurts like H#//!

Re: corrosion near head gaskets

I believe it's from the iron in the head gasket causing oxidation between two different metals and it's totally common--not an indicator of a problem. Blistered or discolored paint and such in the right places, that would indicate an overheat.

I would say it would be unusual to find one that does NOT have that corrosion around the gasket seam. That would indicate low hours, fresh water motor. I think it is electrolysis caused by a tiny unavoidable seepage through the gasket material.

Its caused by electrolysis and is very common. I have lots of freshwater motors with the same corrosion.
