What is the correct idle time for a 96 200 johnson. I have the book ordered, but I am figured I would see if you anybody knows off hand.

Thanks,

4* ATDC, but it really depends on your idle speed. You set the idle speed by adj. timing, so set speed for approx 700 in water, in gear.
If you have 4* ATDC, that would be great, but if it is different, don't sweat it.

We were thinking 4 deg atc, but that can't be right. It idles too high. We thought that because that was what it was on my granddad's 115, but then I saw on top of the carb breather 18 deg btc. So we got it as close as we could and it sounds pretty good. I read another post that said something about a 4 deg diff. which would put me right on. I am gonna take her in the water tomorrow I hope it goes well.

That 18* value is for WOT timing, not idle. Better be sure you know what you are adjusting.
The 4 degree difference you refer to is for use with the Joe Reeves WOT static timing method...

You need to study the situation a bit more.

Don't confuse idle timing with WOT timing. Outboards are not like cars.

Idle timing when the synch and link is set up correctly is about 4 to 6? AFTER top dead center (ATDC) not before top dead center (BTDC) as with cars. The idle timing is what determines your idle rpm so there is no exact number, just a range. Make sure all throttle plates are full closed and that they will open all at the same instant.

If you are running the motor on a flusher, then you cannot set idle speed. It has to be in the water. Out of water it may idle at around 1200 rpm, but with backpressure on the exhaust while in the water, it will idle in gear about 650-750 rpm.

At full throttle the timing should be about 18? BTDC.

Thanks guys, I just decided to check this thread out before I went to the river. Luckily I had atdc and btdc opposite, so I am not that far off. Ofcourse, that is where the motor sounded the best. I have it idling in the yard around 12 deg atc. and it is right about 1100 rpms. So, I may advance it just a little before I take it.

Well, got to the river, everything sounding good. Ran got up on a plane fine, ran about 2 to three miles at 4000 rpms sounded great. then the rpms dropped and the motor shut off, could crank it back up and it would fire up idle for a few seconds then shut back off.

Is it possible for the timing assembly to be working, but not correctly? I know that the guy who worked on my motor replaced it with another used one, though mine was working fine when i took it to him.

That could be several things. Yes, electronics can quit working when they get hot. The symptoms you describe could also be caused by a plugged fuel tank vent - but if that happened you'd be hearing the alarm (assuming the vacuum switch was operating correctly). I'm sure others can come up with a few more suggestions.
