I would like to see what shape my transom is in. What do I use to core and where do I do this?
I am sure this is a dumb question, but I am just learning. "the hard way":(

Just use a regular old drill bit. Drill in the center, toward the bottom. Near the drain plug. And take a couple moving up. Put a piece of tape around the drill bit to indicate about a 1" depth, or use a bit that only sticks about 1" out of the drill. I would use about a quarter inch bit. Look for dry blonde colored shavings. Reddish colored damp shavings are on their way to rotting. Rotted shavings are obvious.

ok thanks. I would drill from the outside right? What about the holes in the boat? Just patch over them?

You should drill from the inside of the boat.. You can use 5200 to seal the holes..

Sorry, yeah I should have specified that. Definitely drill from the inside.
