WOW that is a lot of work. I have never seen anyone do this before. Did you just want to randomly replace the core?

Very nice job, lots and lots of work. That boat must be worth it.

Seeing that rot makes me want to be triple careful to keep my cores dry :)

You read my mind erik. I with all the rot in my boat I am just praying that my little bayliner does not have a wood core in the hull like that, If it does it is sure to be rotted.

Lol.. If that's a small job, can we see pics of a "large" job?

I'm sooooo thankful I don't have a cored hull. I've read horror stories about them. Most hardcore restore guys recommend passing on any cored construction, even if it's in good shape.

Thank you.

It wasnt a random placement of the core. I knew the whole side had to be done .. but did not want to cut ALL the skin off the side because I didnt want to " relax " the hull shape. So I did it in sections. Also I wanted to encapsulate each section separate so if there was water intrusion it would not affect the whole side again.

YD.

PS. I will show a big job next :)

Beautiful work ..... now for some questions ;)

How long did all that take?

What are the differant materials you used?

I see thare was a black putty around each sheet - which is?

How much glass went over the repairs or did you re-glass the cut panels back?

What did you use to fair it out - the green stuff?

Was the first coat of white a sealer or a primer?

I like the vacuum pump set up. Really nice work.

Thank you Bob..

1.About 120-140 hrs + some extras in there.

2.Base is low voc poly resin, 18oz roving roving with .5 oz mat backed, 1708, Cabosil, nytol, 3/16 eg balsa, Factory gel, a little bit of 3m Premium glass vinylester filler for pinholes/small lows. CCP patch aid. and dykem for guide coat.

3. Dark putty is actually something I make .. its resin/cabosil/chopped mat ( I make cabosil putty and scissor some chop mat into it .. Its custom glass filler called "tiger hair" learned from my uncle ) its cool stuff.

4. Did not glass the panels back.. It took about 20 something yards of 1.5 mat.. and some .. 15 yards glass..from what I recall ( Ill check to see about that ) and about 15-20 gal of resin ( with all the filler makings.. which was alot.

5. the first coat of white was gel coat. about 2 gallons rolled. ( with patch aid additive .. ). the green is the 3m vinylester filler which was the only thing I had on hand atm.

I didnt use one oz of wax solution in this project. wax is kinda .. scary when multiple fill/fair/fill/fair/ etc is being done.

Oh oh.. I did loose about 20 lbs shaping this with custom made longboards ( 2"x 5',3',2' blueboard insulation ).

You do absolutely beautiful work DOC !

How long have you been doing this ?

You mentioned your uncle I would assume he also was very good with wood hulls also ?

120-140 hrs , you must fly ! I quess the difference in someone who does this as a living versus a amature.

Re: Core job with pics..

thank you Apple..

doing this from hurricane Hugo..then Andrew.. 20 years m8..

My uncle is indeed close to a "shipwright" wood,glass..etc..

Its not really the speed..its the product knowledge..and loads of tools.. ( I have about 4k in tools .. and I know every abrasive/my own/products out there.. key.. " hint hint " )

there is no "fast cure" anything that can cures your ills :)

Patience..and hard work ..get into it. safety, filthy hard .. nasty work.. ITs what I do m8.. call it Zen..call it whatever..you get into it...and get it done ..It gets done..

Thank you again..
