i've a 6hp evinrude model number-6604A. Finally got a chance to start the motor today. IHave one question about the water pump? There is no water coming out the exhaust bypass hole and there is air bubbles coming from a screen on the port side of the gear case. I assuming the water pump is bad. Went to ishopmarine to order one. But there are 3 kits, chrome kit, water pump repair kit, and impeller kit. All three are for 5inch longer parts. Would any one of these fit my short shaft engine? Thanks again for any and all help. Paul

Paul....were you running in a garbage can full of water? If so, it dosen't sound like you had enough water in the can. The water should well over the water pump.

The kit part number has changed. Look for kit PN391391. Kit PN379764 is still for long shaft engines.

When running in water, you should see a misty spray from the exhaust releif ports. You'll see a little more once the t-stat opens. Keep in mind the t-stat. If it hasn't been changed out in a while, do so.

Did the engine show any signs of overheat when you run it?

Thanks for reply. Water was about 5 inches above the water pump. I order new water pump kit and t-stat. Is this statement true on how the cooling system works? When the engine is running there should be some water coming out the exhaust relief ports. Thanks for the help Paul.

Yes. You should see a misty spray from the ports which will pick up a little when the t-stat opens. Sometimes you may not even see the spray.
