Ok I have a 1995 Nissan 25hp 2 stroke motor that is a tiller steer. I want to convert it over to a console steer. My question is what all is needed for this conversion? I've done some research and know that i'll need control cables and control box, but after that things get kind of sketchy. Any comments and tips would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: Converting from tiller to console steering???

If you have electric start, the job is do-able, but probably not cost effective, especially with new parts costs. It may well be better to get an EP (electric/remote) model, rather than converting your (tiller) model. If you are presently pull start (only), and want to convert to electric start, add that cost (for starter motor, and all the associated bits) in as well.

The actual process depends on the kind of steering you want. Modern, single-ended "Teleflex Style" steering requires quite a few parts changes, but if the boat is already setup for "Tiller Cable" double-ended steering, you can get by with fewer changes.

Review a parts catalog, available on Elvin's website, and that will show you the differences in castings, etc, that will be steering-related. You will also need an RC fitting kit, to connect the throttle, shift, and key start stuff for the RC box.

Re: Converting from tiller to console steering???

I kicked this idea around for a couple of years when I had an 18hp motor.

I found very little "how to convert to console" info, and I think the reason is
because there are some tricks involved at the motor. Any mistake could
result in a serious operational mishap and liability issues.

I kept looking, and found a higher hp motor with the cables and control box.
I bought an aluminum console, steering wheel and cable, and put it all
together. Since the motor, cables, and control box was a package unit, that
made a snap for a semi-do-it-yourself guy.

I'd suggest calling the motor dealer for some info. They'll let you know
what you have to deal with.

Good luck!

Complete after market steering system

Plus

Tohatsu/Nissan:
Control box assembly
Steering link
SRC kit
Pair of control cables

Figure about $900.00 for everything.
