Re: converting a vintage ob to electronic ignition

have yet to get this motor on the water.....cant seem to get time and weather in sync! but heres a short clip of the motor at idle. not as smooth as i would like but, its the best i can get in a barrel. notice the lack of smoke? the fuel is mixed at 16:1 ( 8 liters gas...500ml oil)

the water in the bucket is after about five mins of running at idle.after 15 mins or so....the water is nasty! lol and yes....mixed at 16:1. i mix at that ratio so i dont risk running my 16:1 motors at 24:1. ( may not hurt anyway, but why take the chance over a few cents worth of oil)

No smoke... how did you do that, synthetic oil?

Quit teasing us and go take it for a proper water trial already... :)

no synthetic stuff just the johnson/rude oil....and it does make a puff of smoke when i up the rpms, then you can barely see any again?
and i know.....its just killing me to see how it will run on the water!!!

Runs nice Tim!

16:1? You could run that puppy at 60:1 or 100:1 with Amsoil :) :)

(editors note: For those that do not know me that was a joke, I do not recommend running any motor so lean, just a FY!)

The XD series of oil>? If so I also highly recommend that, it is about the best oil I have ever tested. Period.

not sure if its the XD oil. bought a new 25 hp back in 1999 or 2000, it came with 4 liters of oil, and i added another jug to the invoice. sold the motor and kept the full jug. the label is nothing more than a glue spot now. . but the oil is red!? lol

lol Chris......i bet at those ratios.....if it did smoke.....the smoke would end shortly after the "rattle....bang ...silence"!!

Re: converting a vintage ob to electronic ignition

do you attribute the reduced smoke to the electronic ignition? Or is it too early to reach that conclusion?

No. Oil quality is 1 major factor. Carb needle setting another. An overly rich running motor will smoke more.

i personally cant attribute the lack of smoke to the modules ( they do advertise multiple spark per ignition ignition cycle for better combustion). have never ran this motor using points. i do agree with Chris on the oil quality. i try to avoid the cheap stuff, and cant afford the high end synthetics! lol

1957 evinrude 10 - YouTube

ok, for those who wanted to see how this motor ran on the water^ there she is. from hole shot to 31 kmph(19mph) on my 12 ft tinny.
porpoising a bit, and the motor is about 3 inches to deep in the water, so maybe i can get 32 out of it? lol. i ran it for an hour or so,it ran flawlessly at all throttle settings.
