Convert a cuddy to an open bow?

I'm curious about something. Is it possible to convert a cuddy to an open bow, or is it better to simply sell the cuddy and buy an open bow.

I have a 1987 Bayliner 17ft cuddy and I'm wondering if its possible to convert my cuddy to an open bow. It looks like the models for that year are basically the same except for the roof of the cuddy where the open bow is. The bottom is open for the open bow feet area and cushion section.

Is it possible to cut away the roof, make some side moldings and curved body arches? Or, is the integrity an issue and its better to sell the cuddy and buy something else. I don't have a lot of money tied into it right now, so I'm willing to experiment a bit if the Mrs gives me the green light.

What does everyone think?

I have a 19 bowrider. The open bow is a molded piece of fiberglass, which supports the hull mold, as does your closed bow. If you were to cut away the front deck of your bow, side to side strength of the bow would be seriously reduced. I would recommend that you study the design of a bowrider, so you can replace the strength lost by cutting your deck.

People have inquired about this in the past and there are many factors that come into play. Best to buy a bow rider. Its quicker, and problably not that far off in expense after you include the cost of material and your work time and lost boating time (that last one is priceless!).

But if you want to try, see if you can find details on the bow rider and imitate it. Sounds like you are on a good track by looking at the bow rider model of that same hull. If you are good in the fabrication department, I'd have a go at it. If you are a novice, I would pass.

It is possible, but requires a lot of skill. An alternative is to try to locate the bowrider version of your boat. The lower hulls were all the same, they used different molds for the upper portions of the cuddy/closed bow/open bow boats. You could find a ruined hull, take the top off, and swap it onto your existing hull. It would be a lot of work. The alternative, and more logical, step is to just sell it and get a hull configuration you want. Good luck....
