I have this connector on my trailer currently

I want to change it to a basic flat 4. Can someone point me to a basic tutorial?

Thanks

Rewire the Trailer to a 4 Pin connector.

Personally, I would rewire the Tow vehicle to take the 7 pin.
Much more reliable.
And there are adaptors readily available to convert the 7 down to 6,5 or 4.

Does the trailer have brakes? Why did it come with a 7 pin in the first place. Use a converter if you must but you will loose brakes most likely, not a good thing to do.

Re: Convert 7 pin to 4

The connector you are showing is called an "RV" connector. Is the tow vehicle equipped with the match to this? How many wires are coming out of the trailer connector? There should be a White (Ground) Brown (Tail lights) Green (Right turn) Yellow (Left turn) if you have electric brakes on the trailer there could be a blue or red wire to operate them. If you tow vehicle is equipped with an RV connector the that's as good as it gets and i wouldn't change a thing. If the tow vehicle is equipped with a flat 4 connector it really is better to upgrade the tow vehicle. If you want to install a flat 4 connector on your trailer be sure to solder and shrink wrap all connections. If you change to a flat 4 and your trailer has brakes you will lose them. I would go to a round 6 wire connector so you will be able to keep the brakes. RV to round 6 adapters are available at most auto parts stores.

Re: Convert 7 pin to 4

I got the boat and trailer for free. My van has a flat 4 connector. There is not brakes on the trailer, just a small basic thing. I want to convert the trailer perminatly. I don't need the 7 pin.

With no brakes on the trailer just get a flat 4 connector and wire it up. Don't forget to solder all connections. Good luck and happy boating :)

Buy a falt four connector at any auto store. Brown is running lights, green and yellow are brake/turn signals and white is ground. No tutorial needed.

The trailer has 2 wires running to each light. Would I tie the brake light wires together at the plug?

NO! The Brake Lights are also the Turn Signals.
The Right side has a Brown and Green.
The Left side has a Brown and Yellow.

The Brown is the same brown on each side. (Tail Lights)
The Green and Yellow are the Brake/Turn lights, for each side.

Right, so the 2 browns should be tied together at the 4 pin connector?

The simple answer is YES, they are tied together at the connector. ;)

You could run the Brown to one tail light and then go directly across the back to the other light.
As long as the are tied together, it does not matter where this happens.
The Brown also goes to all the Yellow and Red side clearance lights.

The Browns are all tied together TO the Connector, but not necessarily, AT the connector. :)

You'll also want to be sure and solidly ground the white wire to the trailer frame. Some kits will come with a ring terminal already on the white wire. You can just drive a self-tapping screw through the terminal into the trailer frame.
