Controls installing questions for Johnson 10hp

Dropping a 1964 10hp into the well of my 1964 25' Coranodo sailboat. I have an old single lever side mount morse, the type with a push/pull slide behind the lever. I don't know squat about remote controls, can someone tell me how this thing works? I'm assuming the lever is for the throttle cable and the push in/out is for the shifter? Also I figure I need about 7 or 8 feet of cable, but I don't know what type and how you go from the end of the cable to the outboard itself. If anyone can take a few minutes and explain any of this I'd sure appreciate it. Glen

There is no such thing as a 1964 10hp Johnson or Evinrude. 1963 was the last one. A 1964 would be a 9.5hp. If you have a 9.5, it takes a special adapter kit in addition to all of the following, which is assuming a 10hp:

Pulling the knob out disables the shift so you can give it some throttle without putting it in gear. This is for starting and warmup, of course. Once it is running, move the throttle lever to neutrl position and push the button back in. That enables the shift so that when you move the main throttle lever again, the first movement puts it in gear and further movement advances the throttle.

Warning: Put it in gear with a quick snappy movement. "Easing" it into gear is extremely destructive to the motor.

It take Morse 33C cables (now Teleflex, whatever their number is). They have them along with the necessary connection kit here at iboats.
