How would I go about replacing the seal on control rod shaft because previous owner rtv siliconed it and when I pulled lower the rubber boot to driveshaft and ring wasn’t on it but upon further inspection the boot was just inside and I can’t locate the copper ring , my hands are to big to fit in the hole

The missing ring?? No biggie, just lube the splines and slide the boot over them.
No grease on top of the shaft.
There's a slotted screw on the side of the nosecone, DON'T remove as it's a pivot point and can be a B%$#H to replace.
If you do remove it then the seals a lot easier to get at.

Jerry, in the picture I posted of the control shaft with a little of the red rtv silicone is that the seal around the shaft or is that just metal? I’m pretty ignorant to this

I was light touching the silicone to remove it and felt like it was metal instead of a rubber seal

Ebay is good for NLA and NOS parts.....use a site like Crowley marine or marineengine.com to get part numbers....they have parts diagrams and sell some parts too. But the discontinued parts can usually be found on ebay.

So just pry the beauty out and pop the new one in? Chances of me over seating it and it falling deeper into the lower unit ?
